Soapnuts

Recommended Posts

I continue to be very impressed. (I am using the powder)

I don't know if I am still in the Honeymoon Phase that we all experience when trying something new, but:

1. The washing does not smell of anything, which I like. I am not into pseudo vanilla and ylang ylang etc.

2. It is noticeably soft, but not in that slightly sticky way caused by fabric conditioners.

3. I am convinced that the clothes crease less AND need less ironing anyway.

4. White sports socks seem cleaner on the sole.

My mother's just bought a bag of soapnuts recently as a result of reading Imperfectly Natural Woman by Janey Lee Grace, and also cos I mentioned that there was a discussion on here. She's totally hooked already! They're so easy to use (even I can manage it) and they give the clothes a lovely clean 'non-smell', if that makes any sense! We've already whizzed up some of the older soapnuts into a hand soap which is really good too!

Hi Merryn, mine were only delivered on thursday. So far i've boiled up 100g of soap nuts with 500ml of water and rosemary, after boiling gently for ten minutes i strained the liquor into a glass bottle, Then i wizzed the solids in a processor and added more water and re boiled, then repeated the straining.. The mixture is still sat on the kitchen side, i'm pondering on how to thicken it slightly, maybe gelatine or arrowroot :?: . The liquid is very runny, but i have washed up with it, it seems quite good but i didn't wash anything really dirty, only my soap making stuff, i've also washed my hands and it's very nice and leaves your skin feeling soft.

Today i popped into Boots and bought some lemon and orange oil to scent some with, i've already got lavender and tea tree. So plenty to play with.

Tomorrow i plan to do some clothes washing, so we'll see how that goes, i'll keep you posted :D

Am reviving this thread because....

........a Lakeland leaflet arrived today and it has Soapnuts and Liquid Soapnuts advertised as the latest "Green" item for sale for those who are interested.

Having said that, I have abandoned them as although they did leave things soft, they didn't get them clean enough for me....and after a few weeks, things smelt musty.

Back to the drawing board.

Eglutine,

I do a few loads of washing with them, then give my clothes a boost with biological powder. About five to one ratio, i also have kept using fabric conditioner because i feel they are clean because they smell nice. I think my washing looks just as clean. I won't be returning to all bio washing.

I have been doing similar to Anne. Soapnuts for all the washes one week and Ecover liquid for all the washes the following week. That way I feel everything gets a good wash regularly.
