I went to the Malvern show at the weekend - as well as Omlet there was someone selling wooden housing, chickens for sale in the poultry tent and a company called 'Chick Cubes' (a bit too close to Omlets product name?!!)

I was not impressed with this alternative - very expensive compared toan Eglu and the 'up to 3 chickens looked smaller, with many design flaws, lots of corners, difficult to clean, wooden nesting box - varnished perches that seemed too wide. http://www.chicubes.co.uk/index.php Price wise the run, shade, water container & feeder are all extras so it is way more expensive than an Eglu, plus you have to open the run to close the door to the house! Sorry to go on and there is £60 delivery on top of the high prices.

Definately not serious competition for Omlet - but fancy then calling it a cube!!

Doesn't say if it's double walled, that and the metal edges could be quite chilly when we get a cold snap.

**has nasty image of a hen getting stuck to the metal bits of the house like the frosty tongue scene in Dumb and Dumber**

I may have been tempted with the small one for intros/hospital etc but a rabbit hutch is a better and cheaper option plus i can paint that any colour i like!

I have converted my shed for my chooks home as i have a small garden. Cleaning it is a little more involved too but if i had the space and the money for anything else it'd be an eglu any day. (Actually it'd be a purple cube and lots more chooks but Prudence and the OH won't let me  )

You're chicken house is here Mr Jagger

Love it... Chicken roadies!!!

It even suggests (for another extra charge) you can have a glass window added into the hen house so you can watch them :? - have they missed the point the hens want their little hiding whole to lay eggs - can you imagine that in summer? it would like living in a green house. Whilst it is insulated I am just thinking red mite will be a nightmare with the metal edging and access to the insulation materials.

Horrid thing - bad design - an Omlet is so much better.

They're not well designed at all. The perches aren't too wide, but they're too close together-a hen could just sit on it as if it was a solid floor, this is not good for growing chickens as they can get deformed breast bones. The amount of hens is about right as it's 600mm x 600mm, this works out to 30cm square each with another square for the nestbox-so spacing's not an issue.

Pricewise though they aren't any cheaper and they don't look as nice.

I can see some workmanship and care has gone into it ... but really the whole thing is rather heavily on the side of naff.

I won't bother to point out what is wrong with it but for sure there are simple things that I can't believe they've done which is just so, so very wrong and would put me off.

I wish the company well - we need more folks to create non-wooden chicken houses to spread the good word of chicken keeping and keep manufacturers innovating and competitive.
