Scottie
At last! We've been waiting for months for this egg and it finally arrived this morning, in the run - but who cares? It's here! And it weighs 62g!There was great celebration in my house today, phone calls and emails to family members and anyone else who would listen! I'll try and post a picture. Blossom arrived with the others in the middle of May aged 11 weeks so she is well overdue to start laying. Hopefully her sibling Tansy and her chum Bunty will get the idea too! SAB
Wow is that worth waiting for! Now I am having to rethink if our Maran's have been laying after all. We have been pretty sure they have as we have been getting some very big eggs, but although a bit darker than those from our ex-batts they are not that lovely chocolate colour which had disappointed us. Well done that Blossom!
helenmb
That's a thing of beauty itsn't it well done Blossom. You must let us know when Bunty lays her first blue egg too. I am getting a Cream Legbar girl on Friday so will be interested in knowing how old Bunty is when she first lays so I know when I can expect my first too. What does Blossom look like sounds like an interesting colour herself - can you post a picture of her and your girls as I'd love to see them? Scottie
Here are pictures of my girls - Penguin (Exchequer Leghorn) has stopped laying for the winter I think! Blossom (Splash Marans) has laid one egg so far (aged 35 weeks!) Tansy and Bunty are the same age but as yet no eggs. Bramble and Bluebelle are hybrids and have been laying for months. Sheila These not very good photos were taken a while ago - I'm not very good at photographing chickens - they just won't stand still! Christian
Congratulations Scottie My maran's eggs are never that colour
SAB
What colour are your's Christian? I have the sister and a cousin of Scottie's Blossom who I think have been laying for a few weeks now (bigger more rounded eggs than from my ex-batts) but they are only a little darker than standard ex-batt eggs. Christian
Slightly darker brown than a 'normal' egg. They are quite small even though she is 18 months old or so now. They are fine, she is a very good layer. According to the breeder, they get darker as they age
helenmb
Thanks Scottie - your girls are lovely. I know what you mean about photographing them, mine always run towards me thinking I have something yummy for them and by the time I can focus the camera they have moved out of range - aaahhh! SAB
Well it would seem that there is some truth after all in the idea that Maran's eggs darken as time goes on - one of mine has now laid one almost as dark as your's Scottie (not sure if it was Delilah, who is Blossom's sister, or her cousin Daphne). Scottie
Blossom still hasn't got the hang of the nest box - she just drops the egg wherever she's standing in the run! She lays every two or three days but never in the right place. You might have seen from my other recent posts that we've inherited another cuckoo marans - from the same breeder as before, this one is only about 20 weeks I think. AJuff
OOOhhh I am so I think I'll be waiting until after Feb for mine!!!!
Daphne
thats a beautiful egg I'm having to content myself with gazing wistfully at other people's eggs at the moment. I have heard that there are relatively few really dark egg laying strains of Marans, and also the darker the eggs are the less the hens lay. So I'd continue to tantalise the rest of us and enjoy them hugely!

Daphne
what did you get - should I be looking somewhere else rather than hijacking this thread?
Jules.
I didn't make myself clear- I didn't hatch the eggs. my friend did. He had 12 eggs in the incubator, 6 of each kind. I don't know how many have hatched altogether, as I've been poorly & not been in contact with him, though I hope to go to see them soon. He has promised me 2 marans, if they turn out to be girls Here's a photo when I went to see the chicks last week which had already hatched. 3 are marans, & the fluffy yellow one is destined for the pot I won't hijack this thread any more, see the one below for more details. viewtopic.php?f=5&t=34840&hilit=hatched+chicks+friend%2A
