Jonathon Ross/Russell Brand debacle

Recommended Posts

I would link to the transcript but I guess is too rude for a forum like this. If you go to the BBC website you can find it.

Whatever the granddaughter has or hasn't got up to with Brand, it's massively inappropriate to leave a message like that on her grandfathers answer machine. It shouldn't have been broadcast, either, but neither should it have been done in the first place.

It was a really crass schoolboy stunt and both of them are old enough to know better.

Well I also can't comment on the content - I haven't heard it, although I thought the main issue originally was that it was pre-recorded and someone from the Beeb thought they would continue airing the show without cutting out that part. In between the "pranksters" apparently called Mr Sach's granddaughter to say they got a bit OTT and to remove the phone messages (apparently he hadn't answered the phone but the calls went to his answerphone). This all happened ages ago, so it should have been dealt with then and then it wouldn't have been blown out of proportion like it seems to have done.

I don't like people swearing at me on the phone - I hang up straight away.

I do think it is high time that the BBC licence fee was s"Ooops, word censored!"ped - the Americans are amazed that we have to pay and that we can be jailed if we don't. I rarely watch BBC anyway nowadays.

It is getting ridiculously out of proportion now isn't it? I've just heard that said grandaughter has signed a deal with Max Clifford to sell her story!

I suppose it gives us a break from them doom mongering on about the "credit crunch"!

I think it's worth bearing in mind that Andrew Sachs was pushing the boundaries of comedy in his day, he mixed with the likes of The Python team, Dudley Moore, Peter Cook etc and so I'm sure he isn't easily offended.

It's just ridiculous that this has got the coverage it has but that's the media for you!

I couldn't disagree more  I think the licence fee is amazingly good value and not having any ads on the telly is a total bonus :) When the BBC really tries it puts on superb programmes and it's news coverage is just the best. American tv is awful  they have so many ad breaks that you get confused and sometimes think the ad is part of the show  America does have Public Service Broadcasting but again they have huge chunks throughout the programme begging people to send in donations so the channel can keep going. The only beef I have with the BBC is how BBC2 which was originally supposed to be the 'culture and film' channel gets highjacked for weeks of boring sports programmes, like snooker and golf  I couldn't live without Radio 4:)

Same here!

The Beeb's costume dramas are magnificent....Bleak House was the best thing I have seen on TV in a decade.

Well worth the money in my view, but they should be a little more accountable, as this latest piece of vulgarity has demonstrated.

I rarely listen to the radio nowadays, the local one probably gets listened to most out of all the channels available. Dr Who's good though, but I don't see why I should fork out for one programme. Their news team are awful, Sky is better. Golf and snooker???? Gimme cricket on Sky Sports, way to go Freddie, HOWZAT! :D

As for adverts - pause and fast forward, you don't need to watch them at all. I agree that American TV is dreadful, but the other British channels manage without going down that route. The BBC does advertise - Robinsons Barley Water, fizzy drinks etc - but subtle is the game here.

Perhaps the Beeb should consider pay per view. Also every time a TV is purchased, the seller has to notify the authorities for them to check and see if the buyer has a valid licence, but this is not done for radios.

One period drama in ten years, hardly value for money. It must of cost you over £1,000 in licence fees.

I choose to pay Sky, mainy for sport, "Live sport" as it happens not recorded highlights 12 hours later. A similar scenario also with their news coverage. There is nothing that BBC TV offers me, their weekend Celebrity/Chav/Karaokee scheduling can not, in my opinion, offer value for money.

BBC Radio was always trotted out in this debate but now with Digital/Internet radio so widely available (and free) now that argument doesn't stand up either.

"Abolish the licence fee now".

I said it was the best thing I had seen in a decade, not the only thing.

I'm with Egluntine, I think with the quality of costume dramas produced by the BBC, together with documentaries makes the licence fee worthwhile. Also, as a motor racing fan, I look forward to next season when we won't miss four pitstops and a great overtaking manouevre just because it's time for yet another commercial break in Formula 1!

im glad there is a thread on this subject as its really getting on my nerves!

As much as I have some sympathy for Mr Sachs, this has totally been blown out of proportion. The last 2 days its been constantly talked about on Sky news, all over the newspapers and the internet etc. There are more important things going on in the world - people starving, credit crunch, a war, and much much more. :notalk:

They have apologised, they should apologise again (say in person), flowers etc and that's the end of it.

Im not being funny and the remarks were probably upsetting for the granddaughter at the time but when you see what she does for a living and the name of the group she tours the world with she doesnt seem the type of person to me to be easily offended.

Im not even keen on Jonathan Ross or brand but this media frenzy is a joke.

She advertises on my space about the fact that she 'knows Russel Brand, so we don't really know whether it is untrue or not and to be honest that is irrelevant, what matters is they shouldn't have acted like children it was in poor taste.

I like them and will still watch them, they have apologised and I agree they should also apologise in person and then it should be left.. everyone makes mistakes, that's what apologies are for.

I think she is entitled to be affronted when claims are made about her which are patently untrue, no matter what her lifestyle choices.

Agreed. Otherwise we are sailing dangerously close to making assumptions about a woman because of what she does or how she dresses. Anyway Mr. Brand has resigned from the BBC and Mr. Ross has publicly apologised, Mr. Sachs has said he has no intention of making a complaint to the police, so that is that. It will all blow over in a couple of days and we will be back to 'normal' service.

thank goodness for that.

They should be fined and the money donated to charity.

All I was trying to say is that the granddaughter looks "wordly wise" to me and not a shy retiring type. :?

I see she has sought comfort from her distress in the papers today.

I will say no more.

No doubt the sum she will have been paid by The Sun will go some way to easing her distress.

I'm personally not very impressed with Johnathan, as he was the one who originally made the comment. I obviously can't repeat what was said, nor can I post a link because of the language used.

I feel that Russell was just joining in, the comment wouldn't have been made if Johnathan hadn't said it in the first place.

News just in-

Russell has now officially resigned from BBC's 'The Russell Brand Show.'
