Jonathon Ross/Russell Brand debacle

Recommended Posts

Just wondered whether anyone had any opinions on the row that has broken out due to the broadcasting of an offensive message by the above couple?

I can't stand either of them, and think the amount of money that Ross is paid is obscene. The fact that this programme was pre-recorded and not live, does make you wonder what the BBC thinks it is up to these days

Oh, I've not heard about this at all, obviously not been reported on down here. I'll need to google to find out what it's all about.

I have to say though that I do find Jonathon Ross quite funny on occasions although I think he's got more and more unnecessary and close to the mark. Not sure about Russell Brand, cleverer than Rossy I think, but not as funny and quite offensively rude sometimes. Putting the pair of them together does sound a recipe for disaster. No doubt poor old Mary Whitehouse is spinning in her grave

And frankly I couldn't give a stuff who they phoned & why.

It seems to me that someone has had a sense of humour bypass

Fair enough. Though I do wonder how you would feel if they 'phoned you and left an obscene message on your answerphone regarding one of your daughters, Oh, and then broadcast the message on their radioshow.

I also like Jonathon Ross but not Russell Brand. I think that the two of them went way too far on the show and I do wonder who was supposed to be checking the show before it was broadcast.

I would hate it if my Dad who is also in his seventies was left obscene messages about people sleeping with his grandchildren.

This is not humour...it's harrassment.

I'd barely heard of Russell Brand before this - when I saw the picture of him on the news I thought he was someone else entirely.

Didn't really think this was Rossy's kinda thing though.

:clap: They have broken the law and should be punished. The sneery apology was an insult, too.

The head of the individual who allowed it to be broadcast should roll for such a gross error of judgement.

I heard earlier today that there have now been over 10,000 complaints about this incident! So there is definitely some strong feeling out there.

I think both can be funny at times, however, they can sail a little close to the wind and there is a line that should be drawn between humour and abuse.

I certainly do not think that Jonathon Ross should be paid the reported wage of £18 million of tax payers money - I do find this obscene.

Well I used to like Johnathon Ross but I think he is just too smug and too cocky for his own good now, he seems to rely purely on his name rather than any of the sharpness and wit he used to have. Never particularly liked Russell Brand although to be honest haven't seen a lot of his stuff. I just think it wasn't humour, it ws like two kids in the playground, bullies at that, nothing clever or funny in what they did. What's funny or clever about leaving a message on someones answer phone saying you've slept with their granddaughter? And this is someone you were hoping to get a phone interview with? Someone who's been in the business a whole lot longer than either of them.

I much prefer comedians who observe other people and make witty and pointed comments on life, stuff with a bit of thought, timing and intellect. (Mind you I'm talking about Billy Connolly and Lee Evans here with a touch of Jo Brand throw in for good measure, but best of all is Grumpy Old Women, that's more my kind of laugh! )

Edited to say I've just heard on the news that Ofcom are now investigating

I think it's been blown out of all proportion. When the show was originally broadcast on 18 October 2 people complained, one of which was Andrew Sach's agent on his behalf. Fair enough, he didn't like their behaviour and he was personally involved so his complaint was valid I think.

They apologised, he accepted it and publicly said so. Case closed.

Then the media got hold of it, blew it up and suddenly 10 thousand people, most of whom didn't hear the show, are complaining! That's the bit I find weird quite frankly.

So now the BBC will spend more money launching a pointless investigation.

I don't particularly care for either Messrs Ross or Brand - I have to be in the mood for them and I'm not that often (give me Michael Macintyre or Ross "Ooops, word censored!"le any day). I am most definitely not offended by them or their comedy though.

After reading the articles I have to say my impression of them has gone down, why would they find that funny? Ok the guy was a comic actor himself so maybe they thought he would find it funny?? I seriously doubt anyone would, but maybe that was what they thought? who knows?

I was ready to be open minded as I realy like their humour (normally), but feel let down now as I dont agree with what they did at all.

I read they apologised, so they should and so should the person who allowed it out on the air.

Very much agree with your views Lydia. I have not heard the item in question so can't comment on it but am sure that, had the likes of The Daily Mail not got hold of it, it would not have merited as many column inches.

I also agree that JR does get a ridiculous amount of our money!

I never really "got" RB but I did read his book which was interesting and informative and has actually made me listen to him more.

Ian and I listened to the calls earlier, I think there were 4 or 5 in total. I'm no prude by any means but they totally overstepped the mark. I thought it was disgusting what they did and totally unfunny. In fact, it was tantamount to harrassment.

I usually find both of them very entertainng but not on this occasion.

Generally they can be quite funny, but this wasn't funny, to phone someone and leave a message about their family like that was cruel and not funny. Didn't he upset Rod Stewart once by saying he had 'a bit' of his daughter? Russell Brand is a letchy arrogant idiot IMAO and I hope they get sacked as I do not want to pay for this kind of 'so called humour'.

I know if that had happended to my dad he would have gone mad!!

.... shaming a little girl, shows what feelingless chaps they are.

I have no feelings one way or the other on this but I just wanted to say for clarity's sake according to the Telegraph Mr Sach's granddaughter is an 'aspiring glamour model' and a member of a burlesque dance troup not a six-year old in a gymslip.

That doesnt mean she or her grandfather deserve any of this but does spin it in a slightly different direction. The two men were calling Andrew Sachs to complain that he hadn't showed up for an interview and got his answering machine, and things got out of hand.

I think the issue is the BBC funding of this that galls..

The Beeb won't fire these two, they are worth too much. Why do you think that either of them are paid such ridiculous amounts?

Ross and Brand are immensely popular.

Sadly, theirs is what passes for humour these days.

I think they overstepped the mark and I feel very sorry for Andrew Sachs and his grandaughter. I think, though, that anybody who sleeps with Russell Brand must be aware of his braggart "kiss and tell" reputation and should hardly be surprised at the consequences.

Well, as I am not famous,& neither are my daughters,I shouldn't think anyone would be all that bothered

I still think that if this stunt had been done by 2 unknown DJs on a small radio station,no one would be making such a big fuss over it.

It smacks of free publicity for Radio 2 to me - & we all know that there is no such thing as bad publicity 8)

PS

Don't they say there is no such thing as bad publicity?

For all parties I guess.

I agree with this sentiment.....I sometimes think the Beeb is keen to let this kind of information out because it is publicity and as DA and Cinnamon point out, there's no such thing as bad publicity It won't harm RB or JR, because those who like their humour won't be offended (or if they are, only in the short term) and those who are really offended by it, probably wouldn't be tuning into them anyway. AS's granddaughter, stage name Voluptua, certainly won't be harmed by the notoriety, particularly as she's come out today and said she did sleep with RB.

The one person who I really feel sorry for and who I suspect doesn't want the publicity at all is Andrew Sachs (and his wife and family too) and I think that is terrible.

I quite like JR, listen to his radio show (he plays my kind of music) and depending on who he has on his TV show, watch that too. RB varies in my opinion, he can be very clever with his humour but I don't like the smut level.

I'd also like to say that I didn't actually like what they did with this stunt, on the grounds that it is simply childish and offensive.

I very much doubt anything will change as a result of all of this though...
