Chook n Boo Mum
Is it just me being an old fuddyduddy (may only be 37, but was born old!! ), but isn't 11pm on a week night a bit blooming late for fireworks to start up again? It's been quiet for a while, so I thought it would be safe to turf the girls out for a final wee before bed & then I hear another batch going off! I know I'll come down to an accident in the morning as Jess will refuse to go out. The other 2 aren't too bothered. They are the only two dogs I've ever known to go out in a thunderstorm & not bat an eyelid!! Daisy actually stands & watches the lightning Chooks almost grunted at me when I went to check on them earlier - shut that door Mum & turn out the light, we're asleep!!! Rant over, am off to bed to moan to DH!! Sleep well, Sha x
Egluntyne
For a moment there I thought you were turfing the hens out for a final wee! I agree, it is far too late. It has been like the front line of a warzone here tonight.
ScottishMike
11:34pm and STILL the odd firework going off Kids are in bed, school in the morning - don't want them woken up - dogs have finally calmed down - don't want them wound up and stressed out all over again - gah!! Make it illegal for anyone other than someone with a licence to purchase, and use, fireworks!! If you want to buy, or use a gun, you need a licence. If you want to buy explosives, you need a licence, so why oh why can we buy fireworks????? Every year, an average of over 900 people will be injured by fireworks - way more than half will be injured by fireworks bought for use at home. Restrict it to trained people, doing professional shows. that way we can all enjoy seeing them, fewer people will be injured, and our pets won't have to be terrified for the whole fortnight around Guy Fawlkes
Redwing
For a moment there I thought you were turfing the hens out for a final wee! Me too! I was wondering if I was a bad hen-mum for not letting them out late - thankfully logic kicked in and I was sane again those people are being inconsiderate some people will be in bed themselves not to mention their pets and children. I was wondering if I was a bad hen-mum for not letting them out late - thankfully logic kicked in and I was sane again I didn't read back what I'd typed did I? Oh dear, the very thought that my 3 chooks would do anything on demand once they've gone to bed! I only opened the egg door & got 3 sets of daggers stared at me, and one set of very huffy feathers fluffed too for good measure ! I'm glad it's not just me who thinks it's unreasonable, and no I still haven't made it upstairs as I still keep hearing odd bangs! xx

Gamebird
I have said before in another thread that I think fireworks are a complete waste of money. They frighten the wildlife and domestic animals, pollute the atmosphere are a danger to humans and put our emergency services under a lot of pressure. It's not a 'not in my back yard' protest because all my animals are fine with the noise and light effect of fireworks. Rant over.
Guest
I too hate them and firmly believe they should only be sold to people with licenses. Luckily I live in the middle of nowhere and only heard distant ones although the house behind us had some last year so they may do over the weekend. I'm taking James to a display on Friday - that's the place for fireworks. At a display.
Phonix
I went to a display last night - was fab! THEN came home - well back to a friends to stay for the night - and there were fireworks going off on all sides of the house and I felt surrounded (and a little scared) The next street over is a bit dogdy and some of the kids on there had a bonfire on a bit of green so it stinks outside this morning and some of the fireworks going off sounded like gunshots or canons. Im not old im only 21 BUT i do think that there's a time and a place for fireworks and thats at pre-arranged displays put on by experts - its far too dangerous to just let anyone buy them and light them - far too many accidents and far too many non-accidental injuries and property damage! God i sound old and grumpy BUT i don't relish being kept on edge all night expecting one through the window, or in the car all night when Im feeling under the weather! Rant over lol Stacey x

little cluckers
We were dragged along to the beavers/cubs/scouts bonfire last night and after the fire it was announced that due to health and safety there were to be no fireworks (I was a bit surprised and disappointed although I'm not really into fireworks). However we had a brilliant evening the cubs made their own display with torches and appropriate noises (self made wooshes ) and we played lots of games in the dark. A great time was had by all and not a firework in sight - FAB!
cordelia
I got home at 6pm to grab a terrified cat of the fence (and get a scratch for it) , the other one shot in, the dog too, ashe had been on chicken watch all day in the garden, the chickens had taken themsleves to bed....so I closed them up, and htey just twittered at me. As someone's really loud fireworks had started. Fortunately because of the rain last night here, only one neighbour had some v quiet fireworks after that, which we watched from the baby's bedroom window.... which he must have objected too, because he then shone his torch right into our faces for about 30 seconds... (up into the baby's bedroom window) husband was very cross when i mentioned it... I know it was cheeky watching their fireworks ...but really !!!! that was just mean, so baby, two girls and I were blinded..(for only a few seconds but still !! .and I'm sure it wasnt an accident...but we stayed put and watched anyway

He is shooting them up into YOUR line of visiion. It's not like you set up a refreshments stall and started encouraging the whole neighborhood to watch his display........ MadMitch
Ahhh....the beauty of living in Wales. Not a firework or a bonfire to be seen where I live. In fact We drove 30 miles down a main road last night with not one firework in the sky. I Love Wales Edited as meant to say drove last night not today
The Spencers
Sorry, I'm going to disagree with most of you. I was brought up having a small fireworks display in our back garden at home with friends invited. As a result I have been brought up knowing how to use them safely and responsibly (my father was an explosives.munitions engineer!!!). The firework parties are among the best from my childhood - especially the graduation from watching to being able to let off one or two. As with most things it is not the fireworks themselves that are the main problem but the people who use them! On the same basis I never agreed with the ban on handguns. Gun crime certainly hasn't gone down and as I suspect would happen with fireworks those who really want to will get hold of them regardless. If fireworks should be restricted - perhaps we should restrict cars even further. There are tens of thousands of people (probably many more) who use them irresponsibly! Rant over
cordelia
I don't think people were objecting to fireworks so much as being disturbed late at night...byt the noise... and me complaining the cats were scared, at 6pm...before I managed to get home to get them in... and rant away...thats what forums are for... and please dont ban cars....its one and a half miles..to our local shop (3 miles round journey).....and if we couldnt drive...we'd be homeless!!! (work and all that) LOL
Tiggy
we used to have great firework parties when the kids were younger, handled properly they were not a problem and it was just one night, but that was a few years ago, Im sure they go on for weeks now and seem much bigger & louder, and I'm turning into a grumpy old gal with asthma so Im wheezing all day. The kids go off to a big organised do now with friends and they like that much better
Yorkshire Pudding
We are lucky enough to have a huge council-run display in the park 5 minutes walk from our house every year. Most people go to that, so very few bother with fireworks at home on November the 5th. At the weekend there may be a few whooshes and bangs, but not many. Last night sounded like the Blitz, but only for twenty minutes while the display was in progress. After that, peace and harmony were restored
Phonix
Argh!!! Fireworks going off now 14:24!!!! In broad daylight so what is the point...not to mention that they sound like they're about to come through the window! I HATE parents who don't teach their kids that playing with fireworks is not big and clever and they could hurt themselves or someone else! I have to stop myself from saying that i hate the kids as I assume theyr not inherently bad they have just had a not brilliant upbringing - or so I hold onto that belief. Sorry im ranting again - i seem to be in that mood today - sorry guys
Mutrix Farmers
It's only people returning from the pub that set them off so late at night!! Even when my friends and I were a bunch of newly married childfree twenty somethings we had our firework parties at a reasonable time. The most noise we made was when OH and friend nearly blew each other up (it started as screams and ended as laughter when we realised it just looked dangerous) I do think they should be noise limited though and sales restricted to official displays. I'm a fuddy duddy 42!! And I like the sound of living in Wales with MadMitch!!
Tessa the Duchess
I'm another one who would like to see the sale of fireworks banned for good. Most, not all, councils put on properly licenced displays for those who find fireworks fun. DH was on a 'bus a couple of days ago, he was sitting on the lower deck. Some boys on the top deck lit some firewords and threw them down the steps onto the lower deck where they exploded causing absolute panic and chaos. A woman sitting next to him had a baby in her arms and she went completely hysterical The driver stopped the 'bus and called the police but it was too late and the culprits escaped through the smoke and ran off Ban the sale of fireworks NOW!!!! Tessa
chickenanne
Why don't people who want to have firework parties in their garden simply invite neighbours round to enjoy them? Just limit the explosion /noise "power" of the fireworks that private individuals can buy. I don't get how now so many people are so incredibly mean-spirited toward others around them: I'm not trying to pretend to be a nice person, but how dare someone get stroppy about you watching their fireworks from a bedroom window???!!! And anyone letting off fireworks in a public place (the street, the local park, etc) who doesn' have a license should be taken out and shot. Geoid
11pm... Is that it! Where I live we get fireworks from Diwali to 5th November, some are still going at 2am!
BarbaraJ
It has got much better here, we have a huge well known council display that thousands attend. There has been hardly any fireworks at the weekend or last night but the main improvement is that i have not heard any individual (kids) fireworks thrown in the day or late at night. Someone somewhere is at last not selling them to kids
redhotchick
It's not responsible people letting fireworks off in their gardens I object to. It's the one's that sound like mortar bombs. What's the point in the really noisy fireworks? A "whoosh" or a "wheeeeeeee pop" for effect I don't mind. Some of the really noisy ones don't even have an illuminated effect! People who sell fireworks have to be licensed (as far as I know), but I do think it would be a good idea if a limited number of licences were issued to private households and public displays, for the 2 weeks around Guy Fawkes night, and New Year, maybe with a limit on the quantity or tiered pricing of licences for quantities. With licences the rest of the year too, but not restricted by numbers so much. The licence could then be taken to a supplier to enable purchases to be made. I know some people will think that we are already heading towards the UK being too much of a "nanny state" but the increase in the number of Fireworks being set off in recent years warrants (IMO) some kind of intervention, whilst not entirely restricting the responsible use of fireworks.
