Omletina Kyckling
I got up this morning to an email from Paypal saying somebody had tried to use my account last night to buy a jacket for £70 and asking me to update my security information (don't worry, I'm not daft, there wasn't a link there to follow or anything so I logged into Paypal separately) - anyway, once I'd changed my password etc, I saw that Paypal had let this person send an Echeque from my bank account to somebody else for the jacket and it was in transit. I 'phoned Paypal (international call to Ireland!) and they said there was nothing to do until the payment went out of my bank account on 31st December, then I could start a dispute and claim it back. I 'phoned the bank straight away and cancelled the direct debit which is there for bank payments in Paypal, so no money will go out now, and I started a dispute with Paypal, telling them about the transaction, so Mr Nastyfraud will not be getting his trendy jacket. Then, about half an hour later, I got a 'phone call from my bank's fraud unit to say that somebody had attempted to use my credit card last night to make a total of about £5k for "professional services" in Luxembourg (would love to know what I've been missing out on!) - anyway, this is a card which I have which is only used for Paypal transactions, so I knew it had to be linked. The bank hadn't let any of the transactions through, so the card has now been stopped and all is well. BUT it really annoys me, all the less. Three times now, I've had my card details stolen via Paypal and had to stop them and get new cards - this is the only way I've ever had problems with any kind of bank/credit card stuff - I'm really careful about security with things and even hubby doesn't know my passwords so I can always honestly say I've not divulged my security information. I'm just glad that I don't rely on this card for anything else as to be without it on the run up to Christmas would be very inconvenient. End of rant. I'm going to calm down now. jlo
So sorry to hear about all this hassle. I hope that you manage to sort it out without too much more hassle. I would like to say that I hope that Mr Nastyfraud gets his comeuppance but experience would suggest that he is going to get away with it all big time! When my mum's card was cloned at an ATM, she reported it to the police to be told that it was a "non-crime!"
Egluntyne
Blimey. Well done for stopping it in its tracks.
The Dogmother
Crikey Diane, what a pain, but good that you're being vigilant and careful. I've never had a paypal account, not after a friend had something similar happen a few years ago.. I was thinking of getting one recently, for convenience, but this has decided me against it. I hope that you manage to get it sorted.
Seagazer
How do they do this? I though Paypal was supposed to be secure? My OH's card was cloned a little while ago, so annoying and its such a hassle. Hope it all gets sorted quickly.
Valkyrie
Crikey - it's not as if you haven't got enough to worry about at this time of year. Well done to being savvy, but this shouldn't have happened at all! We also have a seperate card for internet purchases. I'm not impressed with Paypal either because it won't recognise my email address and keeps insisting that it is my husband's account - then it asked if I wanted to change his password! Now if any company uses Paypal I won't purchase anything from them. Years ago when I worked in a bank a cheque came up as "lost or stolen" it had been stolen along with the cheque card. The fraudsters used the card and chequebook in a petrol station and the cashier had written the car registration on it. I called up the banking fraud section and they couldn't be bothered - just send the cheques on to them. But it wasn't long before the cheque book was returned to us - I hope the fraudsters were caught red-handed.
Snowy
Oh my goodness Diane! What a pain! Hope it all gets sorted Touch wood, the only problem I've had with paypal was when I ordered something from ebay and it didn't arrive. When I asked them to confirm what address they had sent it too (they said they had sent it twice!) they gave me the name and address of a fellow omletteer! So lucky that I knew who it was and it got sorted, but not a good thing to happen
A chickychickychick-ENN!!
Gah! That's horrible. Have you virus scanned your computer to check there's no keystroke tracker on it? And do you use firefox instead of internet explorer? There have been some stories this week about how IE is hackable for password tracking and the like. Glad your swift work stopped the nasty people in their tracks. Anna x
Ain't Nobody Here
I didn't even know it was possible for this to happen . I thought Paypal was supposed to be secure . Well done for spotting it before too much damage was done .
Olly
I thought PayPal was really safe, I always use it in preference to other means of payment! Afraid I have to second the comments above about the attitude taken to fraud, however. I had my cards stolen a few years ago, and then received lots of mobile phone agreements, credit accounts etc. None of the companies that I reported it to seemed at all bothered, this is routine for them and they just seem to write it off. It costs all of us, though. Worth getting a credit check in a couple of weeks, make sure that there's nothing been entered against your name. Thanks for the warning, I'll think twice about using PayPal now.
Ain't Nobody Here
Do you know if you can "suspend" your Paypal account if you don't use it regularly (and re-activate it when you want to use it again)? Would that prevent someone using your account?
ubereglu
You poor thing. I'm glad you've got it sorted though. Credit card scams and things really aren't sorted out quick enough are they, and when they are not a lot gets done-just makes the honest public more annoyed. fowlbird
I'm one of those innocents who thought Paypal secure... I'm seriously thinking of getting a separate card for online shopping rather than using my debit card. It seems safer...

fowlbird
yes, that's what I'll do, abwsco - far too much of a risk but I never really thought about it before - perhaps because I don't do a lot of online shopping...
Omletina Kyckling
I agree with abwsco about having a credit card for you internet shopping - I have a card which is only used for Paypal credit card transactions, for instance as I know that if there is a problem with it, it can only have come from there, and if it happens, it doesn't mess up my day to day shopping. I will wait now until a replacement card comes before I do any Ebay/Paypal stuff!!
