likeastar--x Posted December 21, 2008 Share Posted December 21, 2008 Just 2 weeks after Lula, the fox got into the run and had a bloodbath. One is dead, and two injured. One is left, the little buff bantam who managed to escape over the fence. Jasmine, my little black bantam was the one it killed. It sounds nasty, but out of any that this could have happened to... The other two big chickens are probably going to die too. One has some bad injuries and is bleeding quite badly. The other doesnt have bad injuries, but is still in shock. So if/when the others die, we're giving the last bantam away to a friend who has bantams. I dont want to get chickens again. This was extremely upsetting for the whole family. Once the shock has worn off you and your family you may reconsider your thoughts on giving up chicken keeping. How did the fox get into the run? Was it the cube run or a walk in run? likeastar--x Posted December 21, 2008 Author Share Posted December 21, 2008 they have a coop with an outdoor run. basically when we got home the fox had jumped onto the shed next to the fence into the run. my dad was ahead of me with a log he had brought home for them and said that there was a fox, but i thought he was joking, then i saw the feathers on the floor i have to think realistically about the other big girls dying. if they both do, then my sisters friend is taking the bantam, so hopefully she can lead a full, happy life. If one lives, then we'll keep them and maybe get some more. We're all thinking more straight now. Tbh I couldnt really imagine going out and them not being there! Its very sad that Jasmine passed and she was my favourite but I have to concentrate on the ones that are alive. Plum Posted December 21, 2008 Share Posted December 21, 2008 I'm so sorry. It was so bad hearing about your other experience and now this. Sending hope and prayers for your poor injured girls. You are probably right to let your little hen live somewhere secure, but don't give up there are ways to make a run secure as possible against foxes but it takes time and effort and then you could have your girl back and hopefully your others will recover and join her. likeastar--x Posted December 22, 2008 Author Share Posted December 22, 2008 Well the irony of the situation is that we had just put up netting temporarily above the roof because we were worried about the fox. It was soft fish netting which hung over the side of the run that has the shed next to it, but we forgot how clever foxes are, and he just found a way over. when/if they recover and we put them back outside, we wont let them outside the indoor run until we are 100% sure they are safe from foxes. we're now thinking of putting some wire netting over the top for now, it will be unnattractive but i dont care as long as i know they are safe and happy. likeastar--x Posted December 22, 2008 Author Share Posted December 22, 2008 by some miracle, their both alive this morning. im booking an appointment with the vets, i hope they dont turn her away because they dont do chickens. im hoping as its an emergency theyll have a look at her. one is still in shock, but is drinking a lot and walking around a bit. shes sitting down now, i think she might be laying an egg, bless her. the little bantam is acting very differently to usual, normally she and saffron hate each other, but now their cuddling up together! florence isnt looking too clever. shes had something to drink and is lifting her head and has taken a few steps, but as i said, her wounds are pretty bad and shes still in shock. shes just standing still in the basket now. i dont want to get my hopes up, but im praying saffron at least might recover thanks for all your coments Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Runs can be made fox proof and there are plenty of threads on this forum with good advice on how to do so. Fingers crossed for the survivors. Because silly people feed them! Totally agree. Foxes are not cute and cuddly, they are disease ridden, viscious vermin I am so sorry to read what the fox has done to your chickens.
