I currently have a mix of absorbant rabbit bedding left over from my old bunny (I think its called Carefresh?) under the roosting bar with, sprinkled with bocashi (Sp?) bran, and thenh sawdust in the nest box, but I'm not too happy with it, so am looking for suggestions, especially for the nest.. The sawdust seems to evaporate each morning ;) I previously had shredded paper, but didn't feel it was very safe - i was scared of wrapped up legs

Under the roosting bars is lined with newspaper and hemcore and sprinkled with diatom. The nesting box has hemcore in it. :D

what kind of diatom? The only one I can find is for animals - says nothing about hens...

we use shredded paper in the nestbox mainly because it's readily available and we never run out - green eglu needs cleaning more often though :)

I think DE is just DE ! same... for sale in lots online also some animal feed stores.

There is actually DE here in the States (possibly in the UK as well) used in pool filters, all DE is not created equal. You need to make certian it is "food-grade" and not the type used in pool filters as this would be toxic to your chickens and possibly yourself.

I put dust extracted shavings or shredded paper in the nesting box and nothing in the poo tray! If they do wet poos, then I clean out tray and swill out with a little washing up liquid and warm water and non abrasive scrubby thing. :D

Hiyah,

I put straw in the nesting box and replace this about 3 times a week as the insist on pooing in it. The tray I sprinkle Bokashi in and a squirt of DE. This I can then tip straight out onto the veggie plot (during the winter) and dig in - The poos don't stick because of the bokashi and it makes cleaning much easier.

Newspaper lining poop tray with scattering of aubiose 8) Nest box lining of newspaper again with either aubiose or paper shreddings from my shredder... or a mix of both.. depends on what I have at the time. Normally Aubiose though I have to admit.

Aubiose all around walkin run as well...

I have started to use Royalspan Flax in both the poo tray and the bottom of the nest box. I also sprinkle the inside of my cube (and eglu before I upgraded) with Stalosan all over and Diatom in the corners. In the nest box I have chopped straw (on top of the flax) that you buy in a bag in a pet store. I am just using up an old bag of this as my DH bought a huge one but will not replace it and stick with the Flax. I used to use Hemcore (couldn't get Aubiose at the time) but have changed to Flax as its much finer and composts much easier and is less scratchy for the nest box. It was also recommended by others on the forum and I now buy it online but the carriage is a bit steep. I also squish a bit of red mite power into the nest material and give it a bit of a shake to coat it all so they get dusted down everytime they lay an egg.
