SnowWhite
cool.... They are lovely runs...you wont regret it. I'll second that! We're so pleased with ours. We've made a few modifications like adding in some perches and a spring to close the door. Other than that it's perfect!
Egluntyne
Woo hoo! You will be thrilled with it I'm sure.

Other than that it's perfect! same we also bought some barrel straight shoot barrell bolts for the doore & pop hole. which is more like a large escape hatch trouble for me being dogs can jusy walk in & help themselves to chicken food going to make it a chicken size pop hole one day. Are you putting it up yourselves or is Tony doing it? Not difficult
helenmb
That's a lovely start to the new year, I am sure you won't regret it. I love my walk in run and so do the girls. Well done
sandyhas3chucks
oh should add with the addition of a controversial bale of straw in the run the bullying for 2 to 3 hour run time has ceased shhhhhh jope not speaking too soon
Vanessa
Sorry not trying to hitjack post but just a tiny wee question on run size. We are thinking about ordering the stndart run in the new year and I was wondering how many hens could comfortably live in the standart size one? At the minute we have 4 but maybe one day we would like to add one or two or three .
sandyhas3chucks
no idea, I have 4 girls & my run for winter quarters is 4ft 6 by 9ft, as that was the gap it was to fit in. This seems acceptable to my 4 now & I have to horrids to 2 nice girls. It would also depend maybe on breeds and how they get on aswell. I feel as big as you can fit is best in fact I am thinking perhaps the whole garden could be a walk in run you will get lots of suggestions
moomin
We have an Aviaries4U run and apart from a bit of trouble with the roof (which Tony sorted) we are very pleased with it I think the ratio is 1 square metre for each chook, but this is the bare minimum; the more space they have the happier chooks they will be
Ardene5
I've just ordered our walk in run from Averies4U. Should be arriving mid January. I can't wait DH is busy sorting the garden out ready to lay the slabs. Hi Hope you enjoy it. Just one thought does your garden flood? If so raise the flags by placing soil, grit and sand then lay the flags. I did this so our run sits on an area 7 inches above the garden. Have fun. Best regards for 2009. kez
Hi all Thanks for your replies. Ardene5 - My garden doesn't flood but the soil is like clay and clogs up, so we've raised the area by 9 inches. Vanessa - don't worry about hyjacking my post Our run is 2.5m x 1.5m x 2m high. We hope to get another 2 chooks in the spring SnowWhite - a spring for the door sounds a good idea sandyhas3chucks - my DH is putting it up - hopefully with help from my dad I should have taken some 'before' pics, I'll try and take some 'during pics' tomorrow. jjo5555
I'm considering one of these (or making my own) but I have a question. I notice many of the photos have a gravel floor. Now if the girls are in it most of the time shouldn't they have a dirt floor? Also how do you clean the gravel floor or do you lust let them walk around in and peck their poo all day? chelsea
I have seen people with runs with gravel inside. I myself, have compacted earth in our run with a thick layer of aubiose bedding on the top for the chooks to scratch around in. If I was starting our run again I would definitely do a concrete base or slabbed base under the run as when it is very wet the run bottom allows the water to seep through. We have a brick surround (which help stops vermin etc) but a hard base would be so much better & easier to clean. Staolsan F is a very good powdered product, its an agricultural product which you dust around....this nutralises the soil, preventing disease in farm animals. Harmless to both humans & animals. Ygerna
I like the look of those I too have a question though. How secure against Foxes are the Averies4you runs please? One of the biggest draws of the eglu is its protection against the Fox. TIA
sandyhas3chucks
People say very secure but it comes as standard with 19 gauge. Many people say 16 is the minimum, .Tony is very good if you ask him he will use 16 gauge. Wish I had absorbed info better i would have done as I have resident foxes and lots of dogs, though someone had a big dog bang daily on their 19 and it didn't give way. Lots of people are quite happy with their standard A4U
moomin
I have 16g in my A4U run. It's very strong but the weld mesh is put in with twisty staples so that even the 19g will probably be a challenge for any fox. The amount of staples per inch is very impressive too. All in all I cannot fault the run although I have the same problem as Chelsea with rising damp and ours is on slabs. It all depends on the drainage that you have in your garden and the amount of standing water that you have. We are planning to get some damp proof membrane underneath but it will involve taking up the run. But if your OH is not that handy with DIY and you can afford it I would definitely go for and Aviaries4U run, they are brilliant
Vanessa
From what I have been reading on the website you can also get the weld mesh on the bottom as well. Does anyone has this or would it be a waste of money? I am a bit paranod about rats so would rather have some protection from underneath but also would like to give the girls the chance to pick some worms from the bottom. moomin
Weldmesh on the bottom sounds a good idea but would they be able to scratch? Or would they hurt their little toes? We have ours on slabs and they scratch around in the aubiose, also I chucked a load of dried leaves from the garden in there today and they had a great time
Tiggy
I have 4 girls in an Avairies4U standard 6x12 run & they have loads of room we have the coop table too which has been great and the girls love scratching around underneath it. The pop hole is large but there is no clip to hold the door up so I have used one of the bungees that held the corregated plastic cover on my eglu run
