stalosan

lime neutralises the acid in the soil caused by the acidic droppings, stalosan F is a disinfectant so kills germs/bacteria plus some worm eggs and other nasties. We use both.

**Regency Poultry** sell it and they seem to have joined forces with Merrydale Poultry, although there isn't much info about this.

Yes Eglutine I can comfirm they have joined together as one company - it seemed that way on the website to me back in Oct/Nov then when I went to the national poultry show they were there with big signs explaining they had joined together, but they were using both 'brand names' until people became aware of the change.

How often do you use Stalosan? My chicken has been ill recently with a suspected bacterial infection, so I've bought a huge box of it and it says to sprinkle it over the litter once a week. Does anyone else do it this often? It says it's harmless to live stock but then goes on to say sprinkle it after the animals have been fed and something about copper in their diet??

My chooks are always pecking around and eating bits from the floor so I am concerned about sprinkling too much! (Having a chook that's been ill for a month makes you over-cautious I'm afraid!! :? )

Any thoughts guys? :D

How often do you use Stalosan? .....

we use it once a month-ish when they get their mega clearout. Pooey aubiose gets removed, lime gets dug into the soil, stalosan gets sprinkled over the top and then fresh aubiose goes down.

Terry Beebe who runs Regency is a very well respected judge and breeder. He writes loads of articles for practical poultry mag.

They are very friendly and helpful on the phone.

I collect mine and Claire drives up to the main road with it and meets me at the gate.

It saves me a fair bit in postage and I combine the journey with other activities to reduce the impact of the journey.

I use it in the following ways with no ill effects so far :D

I sprinkle it around the cube (or eglu) before I put the poop decks in (I use an old flour dredger as this makes it easy).

I then sprinkle it in the bottom of the poop decks and then also add a thin layer of bedding (Hemcore or Royalspan Flax bedding).

I also sprinkle it (just a bit) into the nesting material and give it a good shake around with some red mite powder.

When I'm digging over my run area I also add in some Stalosan and Garden Lime to the soil and dig it in a bit.

Very effective and highly recommended dry disinfectant powder for use in the poultry house. Broad spectrum, destroys worm eggs, coccidial occysts, fly eggs and larvae. Anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral.

From Flytesofancy's website

This is a similar product Poultry Ark Maid which I think other forum members have also used and liked.

I also use Virkon S as a disinfectant in the water when cleaning my Cube etc which is excellent.

I bought all my recent stuff from ebay as I got some good deals but this is pot luck and often Flytesofancy is better value. They are a great company with fast delivery.

I thought of getting a flour dredger too so that it would be easy to sprinkle the Stalosan around but could I find one?? :D:?
I happened to have an old little-used one at the back of the cupboard. You could try charity shops or ebay or any kitchen shop (but would be more expensive). Or, reuse an old 'shake 'n vac' bottle if you had one of those lurking in you cupboard too :D

Make sure you get one with holes that are not too small though.

Thanks from me too Helenmb.

We are going to Cirencester tomorrow as I have spied a good feed bin in one of the kitchen shops there (OH thinks we are going for a New Years lunch!). I expect one of the kitchen shops will have a flour dredger too (I'll just send him off to look at the wood burners that he has his heart set on even tho' I've told him our lounge is too small  )

So sneaky are we! :wink::wink:
