Falkor Posted January 9, 2009 Share Posted January 9, 2009 (edited) Hi Gin is 18 weeks old and I change my mine daily. Today I think she is a he. What do you reckon? My reasons for thinking she is a he are: walks alot more upright than the other two and chest seems higher Legs are grey rather than pink like the other two, also seem thicker neck feathers could be considered pointy/round I know at 18 weeks that it might be a little early to tell but I want to introduce a couple of hybrids (eggs!) to my flock so if Gin is for the table I will make it three new rather than two. Egluntyne Posted January 9, 2009 Share Posted January 9, 2009 I'd say 'she' too. I would expect to see far more face furniture on an 18 week cockerel. Also the stance and legs look girly. We were getting to think she was a he as she had characteristics very similar to your description.No face furniture(thanks Egluntine!) and although, the same age as our other two, did not lay until a full 12 weeks after the other two started. Falkor Posted March 2, 2009 Author Share Posted March 2, 2009 Sorry to revive this thread but I am back to thinking that Gin is a BOY i left the Eglu door open last night so they were in the run early this morning and GIN woke me up. She was not cockadoodle doing but I think she is practising. I have NEVER heard the chooks from inside the house before Also when they are let out of the run to free range Stella and OSH are first out and GIn hangs back. Then Gin zooms out of the run with her/his head low chasing the other two. Gin is also often seen jumping onto the back of OSH. This has been happening for the last three weeks or so. All three are the same age, about 25 weeks and only Gin has any mentionable face furniture. Her tail is alot more upright and her neck feathers do seen pointy. I will try for better new pics of Gin and post them to see what you think but I have spoken to the breeder today and told her the above and she says Cockeral Gin is the skittiest of the three but I do LOVE her. I have had this naggin feeling since they were about fifteen weeks. Even OH says she/he looks completely different to the other two. Stella and OSH are just balls of feathers on little feet that stick out the bottom but GIN holds herself much more upright and struts....... These were taken two weekends ago: (rubbish pics, will try for better tomorrow) Comb and wattles are bigger and redder than this now. I've got boys of varying ages and they are markedly different to the girls. That said I have an Orpington that I STILL can't decide on, and he/she is easily 30 odd weeks, I won't know for sure until I move Scruff on then wait for the cockadoodledooooooo!! Bron was from my first 4 hens and used to regularly tread the others and yell like a banshee. She was definitely a girl though because she laid the biggest white eggs going! We thought her behaviour was quite normal until she passed away this winter and they had a cabinet reshuffle. None of the others behave like her. In fact the pecking order is much more relaxed. Daphne Posted March 3, 2009 Share Posted March 3, 2009 I'm useless at sexing birds (Gin's head looks like a girl to me, but I'm a bit less sure about the tail development!) but just to say ignore the leg colour (all splash orps have grey legs).
