I know about negative reactions I get it all the time because apart from my height and certain physical characteristics, I don't have visible symptoms. I have good days and bad days too, so can totally empathise.

 

I'm really glad you decided to go for it, now you just need to enjoy it, which I'm sure you will. Told you the manager would be sympathetic. Restores your faith in humanity doesn't it

Hi all, thank you so much for your well-wishes again.

Sue really was lovely, she seemed very understanding and grateful of any work I could offer. She did seem very busy as well. The workers seem nice too, although when I went in on Saturday, there was different people in, so it must alternate daily.

I'm sure I'll be briefed on who everyone is though. I'm a little nervous at the prospect of meeting all those new people. I get the impression that there are mainly older ladies that work there and also some people with difficulties.

I can get along with anyone, but I just worry they won't like me . They all flocked around me when I came in though, ready for a gossip . What made me laugh was when one of the older ladies asked "So, what is it that's wrong with you?" so I replied "I have a condition called M.E...." so she said in a typical old lady voice "Awww, well, that's nice isn't it?" It made me chuckle.

 

I wonder what work there is to offer? I must admit, as I looked around the shop there was a few areas that I was tempted to just go and arrange or a shelf that needed dusting.

Sue also asked me if I could manage the stairs, which I can, but now I wonder what's up there? I'm so nosey! I recon, there is maybe a small kitchen, a loo and maybe a storage area/office? Hmmmm.

 

Sheila, if you don't mind me asking, what kind of work do you do at the shop? Also is it your shop?

I've been a volunteer at an Oxfam shop for over 9 years so now, as voluntary Deputy shop manager, and some stints as acting manager, I do a bit of anything & everything!

 

I love the variety in the work & the people, and it sounds as if Sue will find the right niche for you.
