really noisy vocal chicken..positively crowing

Recommended Posts

Henrietta our cream legbar, is very vocal...

really loud..she has started crowing in the garden.....is this normal???

she is laying, so she is definitely female....but its driving the family mad....and possibly our neighbours...

they are all getting really loud now that the mornings are lighter....and yell to be out of their eglu ...so we will have to cover them over more at night, in readiness for the morning...

but Henrietta is getting to be a problem, crowing....she stands alone in the middle of the garden, and puts her head up in the air....and shreiks......(almost cockerel-like)

she is third in our flock of three, the two rhode islands being like twins....and sometimes they wander off and leave her....

any suggestions how we can keep her more quiet....this happens every day as she free ranges all day....all though for the summer I hope to get a walk in run built and recover the garden.... :-D

One of my three ex-batts has started making a real racket too. She's not quite cock- crowing but does the whole bukbukbukbuk-KERK thing over and over. We've had them a couple of months so it could be just temporary (let's hope) but might be a more permanant thing. Had me up at 6.45 this morning (a Sunday!) as she was making such noise I had to go let them out. Am going to have to stop letting them come out of the eglu of own accord I think as neighbours will start to complain if it gets too early.

noisy hens here Im afraid.

They always tend to go into a "mass choir" of bok boks just as I am going in the shower :wall:

Once one starts - they all start.

I have tried to ssshhh them up by telling them off but they dont listen  a quick blast of the hosepipe in their direction (not actually at them) or chucking a handful of corn down usually shuts them up for a bit.

I just think some hens are noisier than others really.

My littlest one has been making a racket lately - she has already laid this morning but keeps going back into the cube, coming out with a sounds like a scream that is sort of gargling. I assure you I am not throttling her while she makes this noise - but am very tempted. She stops briefly to fill her face with distractions of mealworms then charges back down the garden and gargles all over again. OH wondered if she is concerned that her egg has disappeared and maybe she is starting to feel broody? She's quiet at the moment, so I might go and put the china egg in just in case. She had been making the bokking sound but that only lasts a short session and not a regular occurence - this one just goes on and on - goodness knows what the neighbours think. OH said I should stop trying to draw attention to the noise - as if it would make a difference!

No advice I'm afraid.

I thought that I had got away with the noise as my two have never made a huge amount of noise.

We have just come back off holiday and they have been at a farm close to loads of other chickens and I think that they have learned how to use their voices. I honestly thought that something was by the run this morning they were so noisy. They will be back down the garden pretty sharpish if this keeps up!

The last time someone posted about noisy birds I was all cockahoop that mine were quiet little girls, with only the occasional holler to announce the furball from along the way was approaching or they had laid (very very occasional, usually silent)

Then I got the Orpingtons (can you tell I'm a little miffed, they've got their full moniker  !!!!).....well I can't believe how much noise those little madams make, and for no good reason at all most of the time. And they are encouraging my almost silent ones to get gobby too.

When I first raised the subject of chooks with my neighbour he said they'd be noisy "oh no" says I "I'm only getting girls & they are quiet, it's the boys who make a noise................... "

I just hope he doesn't start getting stroppy ( he can..very  ). I don't think I could give up any of my girls now, they are all part of the family - mind you Drusilla did get threatened with the pot earlier  ( :shh: I'd rather they moved, although that could open up a whole new can of worms...!)

Mine laid another egg - no wonder she got confused and whinged so much - that's twice now she's done that. Why can't she go in the cube half hour beforehand like the other girls and be quiet - then simply drop and go. She also makes the same racket when she is begging to the little birds on the little bird feeder, the wench, but luckily she stops when they fly away.

The only reason we got cochins was because they are supposed to be quiet.....how wrong is that statement! I could throttle Star my white cochin at the moment, so noisy!
