Nicola H
Well done Karen, sounds like they will be very spoilt chooks and rightly so after the terrible conditions they were rescued from.....
ubereglu
You must feel like a Happy Mama hen now What are you going to call them-don't worry too much about their limps. Muddles kept leaping off high things and ended up limping twice. She learnt her lesson now and won't do high jumping classes now

Karen & co.
Came on to update my profile and read up how to post photo's ( not very bright in the computer wizardry department ) Plus a quick description of the girls Fairy is the smallest and least feathered bottom of the pecking order at the moment, she seems very quiet and tired Pixie can't walk at the moment as she has an injured leg so she is spending her time in a washing up bowl full of straw with food and water in front, she makes up for her lack of movement by looking rather regal Sprite is very skittish, and inquisitive, loves catching daddy longlegs Elf is definately the boss, the most feathered and darkest hen, although Fairy stood up to her, if thats possible when you are sat in a washing up bowl I'd love to bath them, but am concerned about them catching cold or stressing them out even more karen x
ubereglu
Awww, they sound really cute, love the names by the way. Hope they start to settle in well and grow back all their feathers. Pictures please!

The Dogmother
What pretty names Karen, looking forward to the photos. I know what you mean about bathing them - battery hens really smell, don't they?
Mel (& Paul)
Lovely Karen!!! Yes, our battery hens did smell a bit - but a few days in the fresh air and they were miles better! You can wash them but make sure you dry them properly and wash them somewhere warm with warm water
The Dogmother
It's nice and warm today - they can sunbathe and dry off nicely in the sun.
Mel (& Paul)
good idea - shame I dont have time for a sunbathe too
Karen & co.
Quick update on the stragglers Fairy is still the bottom of the pecking order, but happy wandering about and getting more confident Sprite definately got a glint in her eye and plotting her escape I think. Pixie hopped out of the washing up bowl a couple of days ago, and promptly fell over stood up glanced around and laid me an egg her leg is getting better, and she has stopped using her wings as crutches when she stumbles about, but still has a nasty limp at the moment she is more than capeable of defending herself , as I was worried she would be bullied by the others Elf is still top chook, but may have a run for her money when Fairy is fully recovered They are still very hesitant to take any treats from my hand which makes it easier to get them back into the run, but all the treats the other girls like they don't seem so keen karen x

Karen & co.
Karen they all sound wonderful! Are the girls in their Eglu outside? Yes they are Emma They are a little threadbare still, but the eglu is so well designed, they are warm enough, and take themselves in as soon as it goes dusk, the others stay out to play much longer because they are still a little wary of eating from my hand I haven't let them freerange yet, but Pixie had a dust bath today, well one side of her, as the other is still too sore to lie on I will feel more confident about getting them back in if they will take treats karen x
Tamsin
Well done Karen Congratulations to you lucky chickens that have ended up in a lovely well-deserved home . The name Pixie also belongs to my sausage dog,its such a cheeky name
theherd123
Thanks for that Karen! Glad to hear that they are doing ok. This topic is really useful to me as i have booked to get my rescue chickens on the 4th Nov. (Im excited & nervous!) I have booked some time off work the following week to ensure they are ok. We plan to keep them in the house for a few days to keep a very close eye on them but after this do you think they will be ok in the eglu outside? Im worried it will be a little cold. Karen & co.
Roll on 4th November Emma My girls went straight out because it was sunny when I brought them home, and just wanted them to feel some warm sun on their straggly little bodies There had been a torrential downpour when I went up to collect them and the journey home was as bad but it eased off as I came off the M6 and by the time I got into the garden the sun was shining (Christopher thought it must be an omen ) They are alot stronger even after a week and saw rain for the first time yesterday, and two of them deliberately stood near to the edge of the run out of the cover of the pvc top we cover the run with, to stand and look up at the rain they really were so funny I would think it's best to see what state they are in first, as mine are threadbare with Fairy being the least endowed in the feather department, but as battery hens go, I was reasonably pleased with the state of them, as they could have been virtually oven ready I have to admit, I was trembling when I went to pick them up, incase they were so bad I wouldn't be able to look after them properly I'm looking foreward to hearing about your girls karen x
