someone has been using our bank card and bought an expensive computer on it!!! It is a card that is NEVER used on the internet and only ever used at Waitrose or the local petrol station. It's the second time one of our accounts has been used to commit fraud. Last month it was our M&S card!!!

 

Why can they not trace the people who order things from someone else's account?

There was a big story a while ago about credit cards being 'cloned'when used at petrol stations, maybe that is what has happened to yours?

I would put bets on the petrol station staff. They were cloning card numbers at one near my SIL's a while ago.

I went to a petrol station near me not so long aog and they wanted me to give them my card WHILE I filled up! I said no and drove off and found another one, I NEVER let my card out of my sight for this very reason. I know it's not a 100% guarantee that it won't happen but if I can see what they're doing with my card, I could probably spot any funny business.

This is apparently standard practice in America. Once I simply refused and told them they could hold my driving license instead. (I didn't actually give them any option... I can be pretty bolshy sometimes. ) Another time I told the friend I was travelling with to go in and watch it.

 

I've been to some garages in this country where they demand to hold your credit card while you fill up if it is "late". If I'm not desperate then, like Poet, I drive off. I have also once "paid" in advance (using cash) but I put in more than the amount I paid (I thought they'd cut me off) so I said to give me the cash back and I'd pay by card... which they accepted.

 

I have 2 problems with this practice...

1) I don't want some stranger looking after my card for me.

2) I don't like being treated like a thief.

Only go to reliable petrol stations such as Sainsbury and never let you card out of your sight even for a second.

My parents card has been cloned recently, they found out when the bank statement arrived showing that £1,200 had been spent on an account they rarely use. They have been able to contact some of the companies where purchase have been made (a clothing catalogue and an organic farm shop) who have then passed on the details to the police in London (where they are based) but they are not willing to investigate until the bank informs them, and the bank will not contact them until my parents can prove that they did not make the purchases! At least the fraudsters did not receive their goods - although my parents acoount had already been charged, some of the goods were awaiting delivery and have been delivered to a local homeless charity instead.

Haapened to us twice luckily second time bank rang us to check on the spending. I think its the petrol stations too as they tried to send money to Mumbai or somewhere out in sticks! I pay by cash now and have told OH to do same. They are a scummy lot I would like to shake them by te neck. I also complained about security mirror in one garage as it was right over PIN machine. Noticed it had been moved. I want to tell everyone paying by card to watch out as their card is at risk. OOh I'm so mad

our local petrol station was in on this one too last year, the owner is gone now and we have new staff, I still don't trust them, our card was frozen by the bank when we were on holiday last year, when OH got in touch with them they had realised that we were abroad and someone had charged our account that day for £5000 worth of computor equipment from a shop in London

There's a petrol station near our caravan which is well known for cloning but my OH had it happen to him when he used a co-op shop near us. The thiefs ended up using it in a Tesco in Wisbech - apparently it was eastern european people doing it. I have to say that Tesco were quite quick as were Barclays.

I suspect it is a joint scam with the 'computer companies'. £5000 is an awful lot to spend on computers for personal use but a great way to launder the cards.

 

We need to all switch to using cash for petrol

You can't even trust household name garages though. My local Morrison's in London had staff who swiped and cloned cards. Lots of them. It made the local press.

 

Report the garage and the Waitrose to the police and see what they turn up. How horrible for you.
