Guest Posted April 5, 2009 Share Posted April 5, 2009 (edited) My Mariana has peritonitis again and after a baytril injection on Friday and 2 days of tablets so far, she's not getting any better. Her comb has shrivelled quite a bit and gone purpley and she's very thin. I've tried giving her sweetcorn mixed with avipro, soaked bread and weetabix with added avipro. She's had little bits of it and I've just had her in the conservatory on my knee and managed to syringe about 5ml of sugar water into her. I don't know what else I can do for her??? I've just popped her back in the run, in the sun with her friends but I think we're losing her. All you can do is to keep on doing what you are doing with the love, care & attention. Lets hope she pulls through this episode. x Just a thought...does she like cucumber? Guest Posted April 5, 2009 Share Posted April 5, 2009 I've just had her back in the conservatory on my lap, I mixed half a weetabix with lots of water and some avipro and syringed it into her. She had quite a lot and even ate some on her own. Her comb is looking more red and less withered. I've popped her back now and will try some more before bedtime. I might do some really sloppy mashed potato as I don't want her to have too much weetabix. Guest Posted April 5, 2009 Share Posted April 5, 2009 hi I made some mashed potato for all the girls and put a bit in a cup for mariana and made it sloppy with some water and mixed in some avipro and syringed it into her beak. My beloved Clarry used to have days like that with a shrivelled, purple comb and no energy but she bounced back time and time again. I hope Mariana pulls though for you. Guest Posted April 6, 2009 Share Posted April 6, 2009 it's not looking good. Her comb is withered and purpley again, she's skin and bone and her crop is quite large and doughy. I've brought her in, she can't even stand. She's on a towel on a cushion in the conservatory. I've tried massaging her crop a bit to see if it goes down and I've syringed a tiny amount of water with avipro in it into her. I've just left her in peace now where she can see and hear her friends. I'm not sure there's much point going back to the vet She's an ex batt so must be about 3 years old by now? She's so thin I'm not sure she'd survive all the prodding and poking. Just know that you have given her a good life, and you're doing the right thing sending her off gently so that she's not in any pain. Guest Posted April 6, 2009 Share Posted April 6, 2009 just got back from the vets. The vet said once they get peritonitis it will just keep reoccurring and baytril is the best thing to give them. Mariana has had baytril twice before so i asked if maybe it might not be as efficient or maybe she's built up an immunity or something. I asked if there was anything else we could try before we write her off. The vet said we could try 'Convenia' which is another antibiotic which is injected and lasts 14 days so she's had one of those and I will carry on trying to syringe feed her with sloppy food and avipro. To cap it all, fatima started to look down in the dumps so I took her with me as well and she's had a Convenia shot too as a precaution. I also had to syringe some baby Benolyn into Molly to ease her cough, as per the vet. It's like animal hospital round here at the moment! I know how it feels, I felt like Dr Dolittle with Ella in the kitchen living and Bracken and her op a few weeks ago. Guest Posted April 6, 2009 Share Posted April 6, 2009 she's had some weetabix mixed with avipro, water and a bit of tuna. She managed to eat some herself and she's had some water mixed with avipro. She's stood up a cple of times and even shown some interest in preening a bit. She's done a very wet poo but it's brown and white as it should be so, even though her crop is still quite big, I think (I hope) she's getting some nutrition into her system. We're popping her back in the nest box with the others later. I know how they can go up and down so I'll just see what tomorrow brings but I'm glad I've given her a bit longer to try and get better.
