Posted April 21, 2009 Author Share Posted April 21, 2009 (edited) I play recorders (sopranino, soprano, treble, tenor and bass) and sometimes play in a group with 4 other people (husband and 3 daughters). Aw man! The bass! I loved the bass with its little crook. Couldn't afford one though, so I have the other four kinds, plus a kleine sopranino which is about as long as your finger with stupidly tiny holes. Can barely play it now I am a grown up. The notes were so high it makes dogs wince! Do you have proper recorders or the Aulos ones? I had an Aulos Fife too. I used to think it was quite pixie-like to have a fife! Guest Posted April 21, 2009 Share Posted April 21, 2009 Olly - you're right! I am a soprano. Middle Cs are too low for me! Good luck with your exam. DD2 took her grade 6 last summer. What are you singing? Chickychickchicken - I haven't got a very little sopranino. Ear splitting, I would imagine. I like the bass too although it took me a while to get used to the treble fingering with the bass clef. It's such a gentle sound. Most of our instruments are Aulos. I was lucky enough to be given the Bass. It was an ex-local authority one which no-one needed any more. i'd love proper wooden ones, but I am very nervous of not looking after them well enough. They are so expensive and you have to be so careful with them. DD3 is a beautiful player and manages to get a wonderful tone on any recorder. We bought her a wooden one some years ago. One of our new years resolutions was to learn a new instrument..I want to learn the clarinet. Hubby can play the banging doors very well! jlo Posted April 22, 2009 Share Posted April 22, 2009 I am very impressed with all the talent shown by people. I can't compete but I do play piano (badly!) At school I played tenor horn, then trombone. Then I got fed up with carting it around on buses so changed to the flute! I still have my flute but it is not very well at the moment. I am trying to teach myself guitar but am quite pants at that. Still enjoy it though. It's like this: And a cymbala which doesn't have many strings and is therefore quite easy, plus some of them come with song sheets to slide under the strings too: If you can play piano I can't imagine you having much trouble withh either of these - piano is much harder. I actually prefer the cymbala as it's quite tinkly and sweet in sound. You can get them from a tenner upwards. Some toy shops even do them. Years ago on Young Musician of the Year there was a brilliant recorder player - I'd love to play in a recorder band. However truth be known I daren't get my recorder out and play while my husband is in the house since I had a very scary moment about 20 years ago when I first brought my boyfriend (now husband) home to meet my parents for the first time. Imagine my horror when we walked into the lounge and they were sat on the sofa playing recorder duets. Apparently my dad was clearing a drawer out and came across the recorders and it was a spontaneous act (or so they say), suppose that's what you can expect when you have 2 primary school teachers for parents! However my mum bless her topped this off at our low key wedding when I caught her in the back garden showing the wedding guests dog agility. Use to sing with St Michaels Singers in Coventry Cathedral before the kids came along and interrupted my evenings. I've not sung with them since 1994 and I would imagine the little old lady I sat next to has either been "weeded out" (the conductor would be ruthless to keep standards up) or is no longer with us. I'd love to go back one day, but need to wait until kids can sort themselves out for dinner etc. Also, my new sax lessons in Banbury are on a Tuesday. Olly Posted April 24, 2009 Share Posted April 24, 2009 I can't imagine life without my choir, and one of my friends who has young children says it's the only thing that keeps her sane! She struggles to make rehearsals sometimes, but we all say that we can turn up feeling tired or cross and after an hour-and-a-half of singing we always feel so much better! Ginette, in answer to your query: I'm still choosing which songs to sing for the exam. I'm going to do a lovely Handel aria called 'Va Godendo' which I really like, but it's very high for me. I'm just deciding between 'If I loved You' from Carousel, or 'Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man' from Showboat. And then I need to choose two more, an English song and probably a French one - I don't know any of the songs on the list so I'll go with what my teacher recommends, which will probably depend on what she knows/has the books for.
