these shows and articles in mags are really irritating. it always says "Wotshername took out bathroom wall and plumbed etc etc" - yeah right - wotsername wouldn't want to damage her amnicured nails. give me a break - there are men out there called builders who do this for you and you pay them. They must think we are stupid :D

Yes, she's irritating, condescending and patronising and doesn't practise what she preaches but if she encourages someone to get their sewing machine out and make something or to pick up something from a charity shop or car boot sale, that's better than buying new things, isn't it. With today's throw away culture, there are still people out there who need inspiring to make do and mend and recycle rather than bung it in the bin or troll off to John Lewis. So much good stuff ends up in landfill because most councils refuse to operate recycling centres at their tips. Most of us on here do the things the programme enthuses about anyway without thinking but if a programme like Kirstie's can encourage those who don't to at least think about reusing something or creating something themselves, isn't that a good thing?

I agree with you up to a point Kate its just that I would have been too embarrased (when making a programme about thrift) to take the audience to Mummy and Daddy's platial pad. Its trendy thrift not real thrift. My MIL is the expert in thrift but there's not a sign of Cath Kidston anywhere!

I thought there was a lot of repeated footage too, every ad break seemed to be preceeded by a five minute preview of the section after the break.

This type of thing *really* annoys me about TV today. For example, on "Location, Location, Location" when you return after an ad-break you get Phil or Kirstie saying "This week we're helping the Smith family who want to move from their luxury mansion in Mayfair to a crofter's cottage in the Hebrides." I want to shout back at them "Yes, I know - it's only been five minutes since you last told us!"

Why are we not credited with remembering anything that happened before the ad-break...?

Rob

I couldnt agree more. It bugs me also :wall:

Before the ad break we get "coming up next footage" and after the ad break they show what previously happened before the break!! Total waste of my viewing time! :shameonu:

I agree about the house :lol: . It was a bit OTT, wasn't it, to show Mummie and Daddy's palace when you're talking about thrift as there wasn't any sign of thrift there at all amidst the grandeur.

I thought the bit of her parents mansion was odd: why include it? The only thing I could come up with was to show that using second-hand stuff and keeping old things is socially acceptable /Not Chav.

I didn't get what was "thrifty" about it. Local "artisans" making pottery/teaching you to blow your own glass is great, but it isn't really thrifty is it? Neither is Cath Kidston (though I wish it did come at thriftier prices!!!)

And suggesting people buy a brand new modern sewing machine, just to make a few of their own cushions is absurd: in what way is that thrifty or "green"?

I do agree that often the best items are second-hand junk shop buys, becuase they match my taste: but surely everyone who likes that type of thing will happily potter about junk shops and the like, and doesn't need a celebrity to tell them to go to a flea market early for the best stuff!

I've just watched the bathrooms episode. I quite like her - I didn't get the impression that thrift was her main aim, more a return to individuality in decorating. As she said, if you like it, go for it! Her bathrooms were certainly individual - albeit not to my taste! I think she was also trying get away from mass produced, media inspired fashion. Some things she used were silly money (£55 for a pair of doork"Ooops, word censored!"s) but balanced by home made candles and a stained glass suncatcher. I liked the glimpses she gave into the crafts. Just enough to maybe stimulate an interest and maybe encourage more people to get into crafts. I know of a couple of crafters on another forum who were approached to be the 'experts' at helping her with some of the crafts. I enjoyed it! 8)

I think I enjoyed both programmes for the wrong reasons, they just made me laugh and why would you want half the stuff she puts in her house? Most of it was not to my taste and why wallpaper a downstairs loo to that extent in some hideous and expensive wallpaper?

I liked it far better than last week, I really liked her wallpaper, but would never have had it going round the entire loo, I'd probably have just had it on the lower half and had something plain on top. I have a large pattern paper in my hall, but only below the dado. I wish she had gone victorian, as I would have been more interested in seeing what she did (and STEALING it), and I thought the bath she picked was horrid. In fact, I kind of wanted to bustle in there afterwards and make a few changes which I think would really have pulled the look together. But that's just my taste and it was all about hers.

Well, if I can pull together the bridging finance we need to buy the derelict victorian house I've fallen in love with, I'll do another photo diary like I did with fitting my last kitchen and we can compare and contrast with Kirstie.

Quick preview - Eirian goes out to buy doork"Ooops, word censored!"s and doesn't spend £55.

The article was ROFL-funny! :lol::lol::lol:

I am enjoying the show, despite the farcical premise. It's good entertainment value and DD and I are watching it together (something we don't do much these days).

I loved last night when Kirstie was doing a stained glass panel. The look of concentration on her face reminded me of a primary school - aged child doing their first painting.

seeing how easy the stained glass looked to make has inspired me to try and find a course locally to have a go, maybe as a birthday treat. I kept thinking "I can do that!".

Do have a go, Kate. I did it at evening classes for a couple of years and love it! I make christmas and birthday gift items as well as items for my Victorian house. I'm considering trying to sell a few bits, but feel I need to improve my soldering before I do.

Here's a sample of a panel I made for DD who is heavily into Greenday.
