Just what is a stone?!?!?

Recommended Posts

And where did a baker's dozen come from?

I thought it came from baking one extra, just in case...

It was to do with the strict weights that were brought in - and bakers would be fined if the weights were below those stated....so they baked extra to make sure.

Hello

Reading your posts, "5 & 20" and "How many beans make 5 ?" seem to have their roots in the Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Cheshire area.

I spent my early years in a small mining village in the north of Nottinghamshire so sayings of this nature were probably passed around among families from the mining community.

I agree with you about the weights and measures.

If the weather is cold I thing of it in degrees C as it sounds really cold, but hot weather I think of in F as 82 degrees F sounds hotter than 28 degrees C :)

I was so pleased that we went decimal just as I was starting senior school, just for the fact that it would make the maths lessons easier and we wouldn't have to work with bases 14 and 16.

I still cook using pints, pounds and ounces.

When jam making I still use 1 pint of juice to 1lb of sugar, so easy to remenber than trying to work out the litre to kilo ratio.

Kind regards

Christine

Whilst on the subject of local ways of saying things, a friend and I, both local born & bred, always say that £4.50 is four pound 50, our hubbies who are both London born correct us and says it's four pounds 50!

The same with measurements I am 5ft 7in, I say it as five foot seven, DH insists it's five feet seven. I know that grammatically he must be correct, it's just the way we say it down here :anxious: !!

:lol::lol: You naughty peeps - I love Muttley!

And I have some stones to give away to a good home - well quite a few actually

I know I shouldn't, but I have come across some great recipes from America - says to use cups. Nah - mugs will suffice - still turn out OK though - just bigger! Ah, perhaps that's why I have so many stones going spare :D
