i know i need 19g or 16g but on the hills site it doesn't list it like that. do i need ½" x ½",

½" x 1", 1" x 1" or 2" x 2" also what width do you all get :?: i'm getting 30m of mesh just the measurements are confusing me

sorry for all the :?: i'm trying to figure out how much it's all going to cost. my dad's designed a beautiful run which is about 20ft long, (think he got a bit carried away  ) and i'm trying to keep the costs down or i won't be able to afford the chooks :!:

There's two measurements, the gauge of the wire and the size of the 'whole'. The gauge of the wire relates to the diameter(or thickness) of the wire strand. 19g wire is 1mm in diameter. 16g wire is thicker at 1.6mm diameter.

The ½" x ½", ½" x 1", 1" x 1" or 2" x 2" is the size of the square 'whole' in the mesh. Most people reckon 1" x 1" is fine for keeping chickens.

My WIR is made with 19g wire with a whole spacing of 1" x 1". This is the standard offering on my make/model (from Avairies4U). There's pictures using the link in my signature.

I went for the cheaper 1x1 19g then bought a very cheap roll of tiny holed chickenwire which I added inside the weldmesh on the bottom couple of feet to keep rodents out - it all worked out cheaper than the 1x0.5 16g but a bit of faff was involved!

Where are you? There is a poultry and wood auction in Melton Mobray if that helps - not a natural combination of products :lol:

I got mine from B&Q but a local timber merchants is your best bet especially if you are willing to have long lengths and cut it down yourself :D

i was thinking B & Q, going to look into other options see if i can get the prices down a bit. i didn't realise how the cost would build up  and i'm very impatient and want it built asap cos i want my chooks :D

Wickes usually have competitively priced timber.

It would be worth investigating the purchase of ready-make aviary panels, or even buying a complete run in kit form. While buying pre-formed panels or a run kit is going to be more expensive than doing everything yourself, very often the economy of scale offered by the kits means there's not that much of a difference once you take all the various bits and bobs into account, never mind the time saved.

We got the same dimensions as the Eglu run (1 x 3?) in 16gauge I think, and we've run it in the opposite direction to the Omlet way, ie 1in wide & 3in high, no particular reason except it worked out better for us that way...less cutting! ....... and it keeps 3 loony labs at bay very nicely  !
