had a fraud on bank account

Recommended Posts

Poor you, what a day you've been having! A friend of mine had her card cloned - it was traced to a petrol station near her - the police managed to track the guilty party and an arrest was made. I gather she wasn't the only one, but she was refunded fairly quickly.

If that was the Somerfield Garage, then my card was cloned there too!

Sorry to hear about your hassle Mags. You will get it back but it doesn't help whilst it is all being sorted.

What a worry for you. At least you will get your money back thank goodness.

Have all of you that have suffered from this had the insurance from your banks or not? I'm forever getting offered payment protection to guard against this sort of thing but I've never taken it up. It just makes you wonder if it's necessary or would they cover you anyway?

My daughter once had her debit card cloned and a ridiculous amount of money spent on it up in Newcastle where she was at university.....whilst she was in hospital here in Sheffield after having had an emergency appendicectomy.

We were very well able to prove where she was, and that I had the card safely under lock and key.

The did eventually catch and charge the girl who was using it, but she was a very small cog in a very big wheel....and th bank sorted the matter out very quickly.

It happened to me once. I was on holiday in Tenerife, and tried to use my card in a shoe shop and it was declined. I phoned when I got home, and someone had bought 4 grands worth of electrical equipment in Sri Lanka!! As I was able to prove I was in Tenerife I got it refunded straight away.

We had our card cloned last year too. My husband picked it up straight away, the people ordered a laptop and we had their address etc. They were due to have some designer clothes delivered so we told the police (there was a station within 200yds or so). They refused to get involved and said that it was not their responsibility and it was up to our banks fraud squad to deal with it. We were refunded but of course they will have got away with it. When the fraud squad finally passed the case to the police, the police told me that the address was well known and if only we had have told them straight away they might have been able to do something!!!!!! arghh!!!!! I think that our details were cloned at a restuarant or similar where staff go away with your card. We dont let that happen now. We insist that our card stays at the table. Also as we hadn't set up an online verified by visa password we made it easy for them as they set one up!

We have had no end of problems with our Visa card what with 7 Sky subscriptions in the last 7 months - just how many homes do they think we own?!!!

Also someone used the card to get money on holiday in Abu Dhabi, pay for Pay As You Go phones and Internet access.

We have had 3 replacement cards but they still keep using the details - havent a clue how they are getting them as we never use the card now just activate it in case of emergencies. :?

I have had 3 new cards in 3 months as I keep getting mine cloned...the last fraud was £1000 on ticketline! Thought my OH had been having a midlife crisis! But it's soooo annoying. I have asked people at work (fraud police) what to avoid doing, as I do lots of online bits for my 4 kids, and they said there is nothing unless you have a spending pattern that you can identify to see where you were shopping each time. I have checked my account and there is no pattern!! They are unscrupulous rogues!

You know I find this a bit scary......there's a lot of people telling similar stories, and my hubby was the victim of a credit card fraud a couple of years ago. It's great that the banks are paying back the money and all that individuals are experiencing is a bit (well, OK, a lot) of inconvenience, but that money is still being stolen from somewhere. What, I wonder, are the banks doing to combat it? It doesn't look as if the "chip and pin" system that was supposed to prevent fraud has achieved much...or has it...is that just a naive first impression :?

I ditched all my credit cards, have a Visa Verified debit card and use PayPal for all online purchases. So far so good (where's the "touch wood" emoticon?)

A few years ago my card was cloned and used to pay a hotel bill in Italy. This took "me" over my limit so Barclays kindly raised it for me and the fraudster was able to steal 2K :(

I got it straight back though :P

My hubby ran in the Hawkshead Trail race a few weeks ago and some guy ran with a cloned number and took his dog with him.

There were pictures al over the site asking people to identify him.

The guy whose number was stolen was disqualified (till they sorted it out) for running with his dog :!:
