toonfamily
i got these chicks today outside of an auction from 2 young lads who didn't want them. they said they were girls. I wondered if anyone could tell if they were girls or not. They are Pekin Bantams. i would never buy anything from outside an auction room but i didn't want them to come to any harm. So for £2 - i bought them home. We will care for them either way but i would like to know so we can name them

Redwing
Yes boys I would say, they don't look 100% pekin to me either but very sweet all the same
Guest
oh well if they are boys(I havent a clue) , I would have done the same as you say they would have possibly had a worse fate?? My neighbour has lots of cockerels and just keeps them all in different enclosures and luckily their neighbour loves chicken noises(how fantastic is that..we need more of those types) Are you going to keep both of them if they are boys?? indie
Chucky Mama
How can you tell that they are boys?
Griffin
Because they have very red prominent combs. No girl at that age would have that. One of my girls is 18 weeks and still has no comb at all.
Scramble
they look pekin to me here are my 2 girls on the day I got them, lavender 11weeks, gold partridge 14weeks Sorry to say but I think they are boys my Yolko (lavender) took 6 months to get a comb at all! They are still very lovely though and £2 is a bargain I paid £30 for my girls!
toonfamily
thanks everyone - I believe they are boys too. My husband spent the afternoon making them a coop and run. they will eventually go to the ark on the allotment. out of harms way. they are lovely though. but the neighbours won't appreciate 2 noisey cockerels. I couldn't abandon them now though. They would have come to sticky end i think. Thanks guys will keep you posted.
Egluntyne
Tricky people often use auctions to fob off the unsuspecting. Sorry you were caught out, but well done for rescuing them. When they get a little more mature they might need separating.
craftyhunnypie
On this one, I'm not saying either way - as I have had pekins with red combs quite young & others with no comb. I actually thought they 'could' be girls, as they have no wattles as yet, that I can see. I'd like to see a photo of the back of the neck feathers & a close up of their tails before I say what I think they are. How old did you say they are meant to be? ubereglu
Do you know how old they are? As that will help in re the sexing of them.
toonfamily
they didn't say how old they were. I am currently uploading some pics we took today onto photobucket will post them as soon as they have uploaded. Thanks for your input everyone. very much appreciated
fluffyfeet
Hi I keep pekin bantams and my girls did look very similar to those two when they were about the same size - I would also reckon they are cuckoo or cuckoo cross. I had a cuckoo cockerel and he was beautiful - the barring on the feathers is gorgeous and they are very proud little things, and take care of their hens wonderfully. My boy (Nelson) fought to the death protecting his ladies from Foxy. Also, their crow is not nearly as loud as some standard breeds. Well done for saving them. Lewis
They don't look very old, I think they're likely to be boys.
Egluntyne
This link has more photos on http://s634.photobucket.com/albums/uu65/Toonfamily/ Some dodgy pics too so please ignore them! You can alter your account settings on photobucket to 'private' and then post links to just the photos you want to share. There are definite wattles to be seen in these other pictures. craftyhunnypie
Oh dear - I am now certain that they are boys. Wattles are there & I think the way they hold themselves are quite boyish. The tail feathers are quite curled too, for such young birds. I think there is some cuckoo maran going on there too. Emma.x
toonfamily
OK, I agree that they are boys, so what do i do now. I couldn't get rid of them after I rescued them. Will they make my other hens broody. TMy hens are not Bantams if that makes any difference. Do they have to be kept in a seperate enclosure. At the minute my POL hens want to peck them so they are very much seperate. They tower down on the poor things. But will have to move them to the allotment when they start crowing. I have POL hens there too. And i don't want to disrupt there egg laying by making them broody. I have no idea just need to formulate a plan for the little boys future. I was well and truly duped.lol
tidygirlsuk
My pekin cockerel is ace and he gets along really well with my big girls. I know of a breeder who keeps 2 cockerels together because they have been together from a young age. lovely pictures by the way.
craftyhunnypie
My frizzle pekin cockerel rules the garden - he's gorgeous & runs with his lavender ladies, a black rock & a magpie chook. He also gets on well with Betty Boop, my Araucana. Emma.x
The Dogmother
Two very pretty boys there I'm afraid. Lovely markings, but a mixed lot by the looks of it. If they don't crow too loud, you may be able to find homes for them.
