Wilkinsons now sell chicken housing

Recommended Posts

I think it's great that they are doing affordable chicken houseing.....but really wish they would do their research as half of them have felt roofs :wall:

Also hope it doesn't encourage people to take on hens who haven't properly considered it and done the research necessary.....i know i shouldn't worry about these things but i do!!!

Felt roofing is a haven for red mite. We used Coroline for the roof of our coop but our WIR has corrugated PVC sheeting on so the light gets in. HTH :)

Thanks Anne,

I thought the plastic may be to hot for them, do you think I should try and return the Bitumen roof then?

Hubby not happy, just spoken to him and his reply to returning it was, well what do they do on farms and in the wild then!! dont think returning it is going to be an option!!!!

I'd definately persuade your husband to return it if you can as if you get red mite it can be a horrendous job to get rid of it. Find some posts to show him about what he'd have to do if you did get red mite.

It's worth checking them out in the flesh so to speak before you buy; some of the cheaper ones really aren't worth the money. I was speaking at the weekend to someone who had got one that was made in China and it didn't even last one winter  the ply it was made out of was very thin, regular plywod rather than heavy duty marine ply.

my mum bought a ready made coop which had only felt on the nest box so a tiny amount for her girls and even did it with all the usual powders and potions to kill red mite. Within 2 weeks all her girls were poorly, 2 had to go on a drip and she had a major infestation!!! It was so bad they were even crawling all over her when she went near the house.

Safe to say that got burnt and felt has been well and truly avoided since. Unfortunately she found out the hard way!!

WIR is now finished a real palace for the Girlies, OH insisted on keeping the bitumen roof but have wire over a quater of roof for some natural daylight for sunbathing!!!so...... eglu I always dust with the red mite powder but do I have to do all of the run as well? 12ftx6ftx6ft. is the size of new run, they have a bale of straw and perches so should be very happy unless the Red mite mooves in so any suggestions please.
