Rescue puppy? UPDATE! 3 Photos added!

Recommended Posts

We lost Poppy a week today. The vets still weren't sure why she got ill, she had a really low platelet count which then went up again so we thought she was getting better but then she deteriorated rapidly to the point where she couldn't walk properly so we decided that it was kinder to put her to sleep rather than put her back on a drip and more pills/medication just to prolong her life for a short while.

Anyway we all know that we will be getting another dog(dad is not so keen but we will win him round!) We went to our local resue centre where Poppy came from as a puppy to see if they had any puppies there or any pregnant mums-unfortunately not. All the other dogs were either waiting to go to their new homes or were their tricky dogs and the lady said that none of them were very suitable for children. Although we are thinking that we would definately want a puppy anyway.

So any ideas where to get a rescue puppy, we just want a heinz 57. The reason for not wanting a pedigree is that we can't choose a breed! We have lots of different favourites and with 6 people in our family choosing one is difficult so if we get a mix then it will solve all the problems. Plus its then a suprise seeing how they turn out! :D

We have put our name down at our local rescue centre if any puppies come in. My auntie suggested looking at the vets. But we are not sure where else to try. Does anyone have any recommendations for internet sites to look on?

This thread was supossed to be a few lines long asking if anyone had any ideas of where to try and find a rescure puppy but it has turned into a much longer post than i expected.

Thank you in advance

We got our two, at different times from the Warrington branch of the Manchester Dogs Home, I think it's called the Cheshire Dogs Home, and Alfie was a pup when we got him :D They are both mutts of the most mixed up variety  but we wouldn't have them any other way

Depending where about in Cheshire you are there is a home on the Wirrel too that my sister used.

Good luck with the search :D

Well we hopefully should be collecting a 7 week old puppy tomorrow! :D We don't really know what it will grow up looking like but the rescue centre said they thought it was a labrador cross.

It has come from a home that had two puppies(one being the one we are hopefully having-we are 1st on the list!). The owners thought both puppies were dogs, when they realised our one was a girl they didn't want her anymore :x . When the rescue centre went to collect the puppy the lady looked at the other puppy which the owners still thought was a dog and apparantly that one is a girl too. The lady at the centre said the owners were nice people but she didn't think they were quite with it.

Anyway she is black with a white mark on her front and a bit of white on her feet. She was smaller than her sibling. Me and mum went to visit her on Thursday after mum had the call asking if we wanted to go and look at her. So we both had a hold and fell in love! She seemed calm/nervous but she had only come in that day and was by herself. When mum put her back in the pen she went over and sniffed her food and then came back over to see us again which we think is a good sign of her not being scared of us etc.

We should be collecting her tomorrow afternoon when my little sister is back from her sleepover(she wouldn't let us go without her) Mum is still thinking how much work its going to be, but when we got Poppy i was the same age as my youngest sister is now and i can remember going to dog training classes and helping to train Poppy so we all just need to work together.

Should be able to post photos tomorrow if everything goes to plan!

How exciting :D This Mum thought how much work it would be, I even used to sneak down stairs early to mop up before the others got up so it didn't look so bad  but then it was my idea to get a pup  We crated Alfie after a few days to give Holly our other dog a rest and he was also so much easier to train :D

Well shes here! :D We think we are going to call her Minnie.

We are not sure what she is now, we don't think she has got much labrador in her because she is not very big. I looked on google for 7 week lab puppies and they are very big compared to her.

We put her in her crate in the kitchen when we were eating tea and she was good, she only whined a little bit. She then went manic last night and when we took her out she didn't do anything and then when we brought her she would wee on the carpet. She has been brilliant this morning though. I guess it just takes time, any toilet training tips very much appreciated. She slept in the kitchen by herself without any noise last night which was really good. Seems like she has accepted the crate as her home.

My grandma came round with her 12 year old jack russell(Cracker) this morning. Minnie was very submissive towards her. Minnie would go up to Cracker and try o get her to play but as soon as Cracker gave the smallest of growls or walsked away she would lie on the floor. We definately think it has done her good to meet another dog. Plus now we have seen how she reacts to other dogs.

We have definalty fallen in love whatever she turns out like. Its going to be a suprise. Mum thinks she may have some Jack Russell in her as she likes toes and biting the bottom of trousers. When she does this we are just saying a firm no and then distracting her with something else.

The photos as promised:

do you think she will grow into a big girl? (just wondering about the name  )

Well she was Tilly on the first day we got her, today it has been Minnie which i thought we were sticking with and now mum has suggested Ruby(because she wants to yell "Ruby, Ruby, Ruby, Ruby" ) So i think Minnie has been replaced already.

We have just taken her to Pets at Home because we needed some spray to clean up her accidents if she has anymore this evening. So far so good today. So we carried her around as she hasn't had her last injection yet. We did see some people there who said she was the spittling imge of their pup so we are guessing they are as they came from the same estate. The man said that his looked like it had springer spaniel and border collie in. So we will have to wait and see.

She is lying quietly in her crate at the moment. She seems to go more manic when she is tired so if she does it tonight we will just pop her in the crate to calm her down.

Oh she looks so cute, absolutely gorgeous no matter what mixture she is.

With the toilet training it is literally a case of every time she wakes up take her straight outside, once she's eaten, if you're going out or to bed, just literally nearly every hour. If you want her to do her 'business' in one place then just let her go in that area on a lead and say the words you want her to perform to as she is weeing etc. Then when she does go give her lots and lots of praise.

Good luck :D

We have finally decided on a name and its stuck since Monday so she is now 'Lola'. She is still lovely. Toilet training is going well. No more accidents in the house which is good, but i'm sure there is time yet! She has become much more adventurous in the garden so its harder to keep track of her when she is running around.

The thing we are working on at the moment is that she likes to bite toes and ankles. Currently we are keeping still, telling her 'no' and then using a toy to disract her from leaping at our toes again. This does seem to work so now she only nips when she is excited by people winding her up. For example my sisters friend came round on Tuesday and she would waggle her fingers above Lola's head so she would try and bite them  She also tends to nip when she is tired so then we just put her in her crate. I still can't believe how brilliant she is in her crate. Our previous dog used to bark constatly in her crate so we ended up not using it but Lola loves it.

What sort of games did you all play with your puppies? We have quite a few toys that she loves to chew. We are wary of playing tug of war with her as we don't want her getting the idea that she is top dog if she keeps winning the game. Any suggesstions?

Also she is not very accepting to being on a lead. I had her on the lead this afternoon and she just kept biting it and not wanting to walk the same way as me. Is it just a case of getting her used to one and putting it on for short periods of time?

I'm glad she is settling down. Most puppies don't like having collars on to begin with but they soon get used to them.

I must admit we didn't play many tug of war games for precisely the reason you said. We played hide and seek with Cookie once she had learnt to sit and stay. Once she is sitting you go and put a toy, at first where she can see you put it, then tell her to find. As she gets better at staying then you can move out of her sight and hide the toy. Cookie absolutely loves playing this. :D
