kazaddress
I was just wondering if anyone else is making preperation incase the human bourne HN51 hits us? I have been chatting on a number of forums, and was interested to see if anyone here is taking any steps? I need to make a cover for the duck area which I can cover over, and I always have a couple months supply of mixed corn.. but what about us? energy / food / drinking water. has anyone get any plans? Louise
Nope The chooks have a rain cover over the run but it is because of rain and not bird flu I am afraid I don't subscribe to all of the scare mongering

The Dogmother
Nor me! A colleague at work tells me that the BBC have been on their annual scare campaign
kazaddress
Its interesting how different people on different forums all seem to have different idea's. I myself and somewhere in the middle. I am not naive enough to believe a pandemic of some sort wont hit us in the foreseeable future, as history has taught us we they will raise their ugly heads now and again. But neither am I in a mass panic about how I will deal with it. I am trying to leave self sufficiently anyway (hence the wood burning stove / solar collectors / water recycling tank / chickens etc). I always buy in bulk.. so if anything did happen I think I could quite easily live off what i have for maybe 2 or 3 months. the only I would be concerned about is clean drinking water and electricity (I wish I could have a wind pump). I was just interested in peoples reaction.. each forum has been completely different.

kazaddress
lol No. I just dont like having to rely on others for my existance. As I am trying to live a "green" existance Its just the way of the life I chosen... to be sustainable. I have always wanted to not rely on others for supply my food / energy etc. Im not there yet.. but on my way!
Cinnamon
Interesting. I noticed a couple in Tesco today bulk buying huge bottles of drinking water - maybe they know something we don't??? I generally do a bit of an Autumn stock-up of basics (pasta, rice, beans, water, logs etc) but more so that I don't have to go to Tesco so often while its cold, rather than concerns about a pandemic. That said,I know it is something that we will have to deal with sometime,& am aware that the need for self sufficieny is greater than ever. For me,I am much more concerned about keeping my family safe, & should it come to it I will take whatever measures I can to do this. I think I am on middle ground on this one, like Kaz
Mrs Frugal
Oh dear ! Time I adopted the classic Bird Flu stance. *Fingers in ears* *sings loudly* La la la la la la la la la la la! I'm a hoarder like you, Kaz. I've always got 10 bags of bread flour (and I'm not kidding either) plus large stockpiles of all the other basic ingredients in my cupboards along with quick cook tinned stuff for an emergency like a power cut but nothing for long term self sufficiency. Guest
*Note to self* try and find out discreetly where Kate and Kaz live. Just in case
kazaddress
Only 10 Kate he he.. I have a lovely relationship with my local organic shop, and they are very nice in giving me a good discount (40%) if I buy in bulk off of them. so things like tomatoes / beans / fruit I like having handy. I am a horder of flour too, but thats because I go through it so quickly Rice and oats etc I buy in 5kg bags, and I have found a really good supplier of cat food (25kg for £13.99) which lasts my 3 cats about 4-5 months. I am happy to offer my sources if people are interested (I can PM people).. but i wont post the links on the site for obvious reasons. Mrs Frugal
I gave up with my machine, Sarah. It's in a bag in the loft. I make it by hand now and it's quicker and tastier and it doesn't have that annoying hole in the middle either ! Kaz - do you live in a Tardis ? I just don't have room to store that much stuff!! Our garage is home to a nice little family of mice, as is the summer house! My kitchen cupboards are struggling under the weight of all the food I cram into them already! Where do you store 5kg bags of rice etc?
kazaddress
I have a teeny tiny kitchen. but I make use of every bit the big bags of oats etc are kept in pine boxes in the bottom cupboards

Never thought of looking in the machine of course Right, now to stock up on flour & all that

Guest
I don't want to be alarmist but, isn't there a shortage of wheat and the price of flour is going up I'm sure this story was on the news this morning as we were getting ready for school/work
Guest
Yes, there was a story on the radio about that this morning - the price of a loaf is expected to rise about 3p becuase of the second increase in the price of flour in recent months. Cinnamon
Just out of interest, & before I dust down the Bread machine, does anyone know if it is actually cost effective to make your own bread this way,or does the price of ingredients plus the electricity mean that all you really gain is a house that smells wonderful? Also, what about storing the loaf - how long do they keep....will I be making more because it goes stale (or more likely gets eaten?) We get through about 1.5 lofs a week, which is not a lot anyway a
Karen & co.
Not much help I'm afraid Sarah, 'cos if I make bread it gets eaten too quickly to go stale, home made bread rolls, can last 2 days if now eaten first you can also change the size of the loaf, or make 2 small ones out of a mix and oven bake them then freeze one karen x
