My daughter has swine flu

Recommended Posts

We were due to go to Australia to celebrate my husband's parents' Golden Wedding anniversary, when my younger daughter went down with swine flu the day before. So we're still here! And eldest daughter trod (bare-footed) on a bee the same day and had a reaction to the sting, plus Molly the cat went lame. Is fate trying to tell us something?!

At least she didn't develop the swine flu on the plane - otherwise, we'd now be spending two weeks in quarantine in Singapore, along with the rest of the passengers on the plane!

Here in North London loads of people we know have had or are having it - it sounds like most of her school year has it (she's 16, and luckily they'd finished their GCSE's). Our GP said they're all going down with it at the surgery. We know about 20 people who've had it.

If it comes your way, my experience has been with us and with friends, that it isn't any worse or different from ordinary flu, to be honest. My GP said that she knows of people who are holding flu parties, to get it over and done with. (I should add this isn't recommended on the nhs swine flu website).

Hi CC we are in NW London and it is one the rise here too. YS (yr3) 12 were off last week I am assuming with Swine flu or suspected SF. Yr 1 had 20 off with similar.Dad is in Leicestershire and doesnt seem so badly hit, however he may just not be so aware of it. Hope daughter and kitty are on the mend and you can get away

Thank you, sympathy most welcome :D

YD is fine now, other than muscle weakness and fatigue, but her social life seems to be back on track so that's a sure sign. OD's foot is a psychedelic shade of mottled purple, but is well on the mend. Poor little Molly is still limping. I'm waiting a wee while longer before taking her back to the vet, to see if bedrest does the trick.

Yes, thanks, it seems likely that we'll get most of our money back, although it might take some months. We won't be able to go to Australia now for about a year, what with AS Levels and work commitments. We've adjusted to being here, and life is back to normal really. It all could've been a lot worse. Yes, I hadn't thought about, it but my avatar is spot on isn't it!

I'm in Alexandra Park, Nochucksyet, if you fancy a cup o' tea one day (that goes for other omleteers, too, of course).

Oh its good to hear your daughters feeling better.

I feel like rubbish ... my 2 yr old has been off nursery with all the symptoms but because i cannot pin point him having 'direct' contact will someone with swine flu they wont test him.

My view is that they have had cases at my husbands office, and where we spent time 2 weekends ago, so he has been around it. The doctors seem to have their heads in the sand here and am sure it comes down to statistics. If they wont test anyone, then they have no cases.... NHS direct said he should be tested and my husband... and i guess me now i have symptoms, but my dr says none of us meet the criteria as we have not been in close contact with someone with a confirmed case....

:wall:

Drs!!! :wall:

I dont want to waste their time, but my little one was so ill - and we were so worried, but just being laughed at by my GP was a little upsetting. " your son has severe seasonal flu symptoms".... err yep, but he could not tell me the difference between that and swine flu... same symptoms, yes, its just different!!!

arrrrrghggghhh ... sorry i needed to rant

Glad to hear your dd is on the mend.

I might have it too although the doctor wont confirm as they are not doing tests anymore but just treating with tamiflu.

In quarantine for 5 days which is very boring!!

Still feel very achy and feverish. constant runny nose and sneezing and cough.

Oh well only another 4 days in quarantine and i can go out!!! yipee

Hope you get better soon, Jo, poor you.

LJ, I can understand your frustration, and it's worrying when you have very young children unwell. I suppose the thing is, it may well be swine flu, but they wouldn't treat it any differently to ordinary flu, so there's no need to put your little one through a blood test, I'd imagine.

We were offered tamiflu, but my doctor said that it only shortens the flu by one day, and although it lessens the severity of the symptoms, it can also have side effects of vomiting and diarrhoea. On balance we decided to just let it run its course.

As more and more people get it, there's less and less point testing, I guess, and it becomes unfeasible really. They're saying that by September, 100,000 people a day might be catching it, aren't they?

My daughter was ill, but in just the same way as nasty old ordinary flu, so it was bedrest, REGULAR paracetamol 4-hourly on the dot, cool sponging etc.

I hope he gets better really soon. It's probably no bad thing that he gets it now, and develops a bit of immunity to the next, worse wave expected in the autumn. Apparently, even if the virus has mutated by then, the thinking is that the immune system will have developed some immunity and if you do get it again, it won't be so bad.

Thanks Caroline, I totally agree with you, I'd just like to know if he has had it, and by the way so would the nursery he attends, they don't seem too happy.

I have symptoms and OH has symptoms, though my other one seems clear... he's obviously saving it for the holidays!!

Oh dear, I hope you get over it soon. It seems to affect the very young worst, us oldies having had exposure to other flu's already, I think.

My GP surgery is saying that if you have flu now, it's extremely likely to be swine flu, as there aren't any other strains currently circulating, they think.

Take care
