Adding photos to your posts ~ PLEASE READ ~

Recommended Posts

Can I post Images?

Images can indeed be shown in your posts. However, there is no facility at present for uploading images directly to this board. Therefore you must link to an image stored on a publicly accessible web server. You cannot link to pictures stored on your own PC (unless it is a publicly accessible server) nor to images stored behind authentication mechanisms such as Hotmail or Yahoo mailboxes, password-protected sites, etc. To display the image use either the BBCode tag or appropriate HTML (if allowed).

Adding images using Photobucket

The only way to add photographs or pictures to your postings is to have them hosted somewhere else on the internet already. There are lots of photo hosting sites like Photobucket where you can upload photos which can be used on forums. When you have a picture uploaded in one of these sites you'll see under the thumbnail picture that there are three boxes of codes. Highlight and copy the bottom one - the IMG code - then this can be pasted into your posting box when you are replying or starting a topic on the forum. The code you've copied will already have the brackets on either end so you don't need to add them when posting it.

**PLEASE SELECT A SUITABLE SIZE FOR YOUR PHOTOS**

There is a guide to adding photos to Photobucket here

Select "message board" at step 4 and your photos will be the right size for the forum.

This may make the instructions easier to understand.

Thanks to Egluntine for a very good step by step set of instructions for Photobucket.

I always use Photobucket. Free to join.

Upload pictures to your PC then:

Step 1 Browse till you find the location of the picture. You can also upload from a web address.

Step1-1.jpg

Step 2 Upload. You can upload several at a time.

step2-1.jpg

Step 3 Copy the Img code and paste it in your post.

Step3-1.jpg

Step 4

If the picture is very large, you can reduce its size by clicking on the Edit Image button and then on resize button

Step4-1.jpg

Step 5 Select a new size. I generally go for medium. Save. Copy and paste the new Img code.

Step5-1.jpg

I hope that helps. :D

As a general rule, to fit properly on the forum your photo must not be wider than 600 pixels. Something like 480 x 360 is almost perfect size. Forum members might like to consider reducing the size of their photos before uploading them to facilities like Photobucket, Flickr or ImageShack. Not only will they fit correctly in your posts, but the upload will be much, much, faster too.

If you would like to do this, I recommend Paint.NET. This is a free and easy-to-use photo manipulation program for computers that run Microsoft Windows (Xp, Vista or Windows 7). It supports a wide variety of useful and powerful tools, but most importantly it is simple to shrink the size of images from today’s high-resolution digital cameras.

This is what you would do.

1) Make a copy of the picture(s) you want to show on the forum. Save them to a temporary directory on your computer. This will ensure you preserve your original pictures.

2) Start Paint.NET and open the copied picture using the File -> Open menu.

3) Reduce the size of the picture using the Image -> Resize…. menu. A box will pop-up, set the Width to 480. The Height field will automatically change to ensure the correct aspect ratio for the picture is maintained. Press the OK button.

4) A smaller version of your photo will now be displayed. Save the file using the File -> Save menu and then exit Paint.NET using the File -> Exit menu.

Now upload your reduced-size photo to your chosen on-line photo store and then link to it as normal from the forum.

Paint.NET is free for personal use. If you would like to download Paint.NET then click here.

Hope this helps!

Help, please! I've been trying to add a photo avatar to my signature to appear in posts. I've put it into Paint.Net; reduced the size (80x60 pixels) & uploaded it to photobucket but when I try to use any of the IMG codes it generates I'm told on the omlet site that they're invalid...

I didn't think I was quite so hopeless at these things but maybe I'm just getting old!

Any advice most welcome as it's becoming really frustrating!

Thanks.

Worry not ajayb, help is here 8).

For your avatar, you can upload your educed size picture directly from your PC, you don't need to go via photobucket (although that is fine too). For Avatar's, you don't need the tags either, it's a straight upload.

Here's what you need to do.

1) Go to the User Control Panel

2) Click Profile from the menu on the left hand side of the screen.

3) Click Edit Avatar from the revised menu on the left of the screen.

You now have three choices. Either upload the Avatar picture from your PC, upload it from photobucket (or similar on-line photo-store), or link to the location containing the avatar image you want to use. I'd suggest either the first or second option, it's safer.

If you upload from your PC, press the Choose File button. If you upload from photobucket, insert the URL using the 'Direct link' offering on the photobucket site (i.e. not the IMG Code that you normally use on regular forum posts with pictures).

Finally, press the Submit button.

You can check all is OK by going back to stage (1), where your newly uploaded Avatar should now be displayed.

Hope this helps!

Hi Andrew,

Thank you so much for this. It was pretty much what I'd done before, but this time I selected the 'Direct Link' option on Photobucket and copied and pasted that into the 'upload from URL' option in the 'edit Avatar' section here - still no luck!

I definitely reduced the file size in Paint.Net first, but the copy on my pc is still too big (ie over 1 mb) and that's obviously what gets uploaded to Photobucket, so I'm going round in circles, I think.

Is there anything else I could be doing incorrectly or is there a guaranteed, failsafe method of reducing any photo on my pc to an acceptable size?

I'm beginning to think it's just not meant to be ...

Sounds like the photo didn't get reduced in size, or you uploaded the original, not the small copy. I've sent you a PM (Personal Message), which should get you sorted.

You had disabled smilies, which I have now enabled for you (you just needed to uncheck the box under your signature). However, you are only allowed a maximum of 10 smilies (or pictures) in your signature and you had more than that. If you go back and edit a few it should work. Any problems, then send me a Private message (pm). :D

For ipad

Start a photobucket account. Upload your photos. Make sure you change the download options to include thumbnails and

easy linking. Choose your photo. Press and hold where it says IMG thumbnail choose select all, then choose copy. You can then paste your picture wherever you would like, by pressing and holding on the screen, and selecting paste.
