4m x 3m Omlet pen, cube, new auto door still boxed and coop light

Do any of you manage to handle them and if so how? Mum here is sooooooo protective of them and attacks us the minute we go too near even though they're now two weeks old. We don't want to over handle them but it would be nice to get them used to being handled.

The Brahmas screamed as if I were murdering them everytime I went near them and Tiger Lily was none too keen but now they're eight weeks old, free ranging and are becomming more and more tame. I'm pleased about this because I love cuddling them and now they're enjoying it

I handle mine from a few minutes old as my broody is very used to lots of contact so doesn't mind as long as we don't take them too far away.. from a few days we spend 5/10 minutes with them each evening indoors.. in this hatch I have 2 who are very happy to come and spend time on the sofas.. as soon as I go out to them at the usual time these 2 rush up ready

 

Personally I would handle asap as they will get more tame early on..

Looks like I'll have to keep on trying. I so want to have some chickens who enjoy being cuddled. Mind you knowing my luck they'll all turn out to be boys Doesn't help that the broody is a chicken who will poo her pants if you so much as look at her

We had a broody at the farm that would literally scream at you if you so much as looked at the chicks, we used to have to take a dustpan to block her view when you were putting food in the coop!

It did used to make people walk through the mud behind the coop (the footpath is in front) and just pretend they weren't doing anything, just to see what you were doing to make it scream

Our broody was incredibly protective of the eggs she was on, but has relaxed now she has chicks. We're trying to handle the chicks on a daily basis, but keep them in view of Mum at all times. When placing them back we make sure Mum sees we've put each chick back and since doing this she's been much more tolerant of us picking them up in the first place.

Am going to try again this weekend as she was having none of it again when I tried yesterday. I wish work didn't get in the way so I could be trying more!

good luck with handling your chicks. try starting with building a relationship with mum give her special treats and plenty of attention before you handle the chicks. this worked for me with my broody.

the chick are now almost 5 weeks old and follow my son and dog round the garden and will sit on my daughters lap.

Thanks Teri and yours sound so cute doing that I've managed to pick up two today but she still wasn't happy. It really doesn't help that she is such a scaredy cat herself
