BocBoc
Oscar (the rescued cockerel) has been with us for a week now. He was a bedraggled mess and unable to walk when we took him from the PDSA. Over the weekend he was showing massive signs of improvement - standing then walking, eating, preening and a couple of cockadoodledoo's. We were due to take him to a farm to be re-homed on Monday night but I felt he wasn't quite ready and would benefit from being with us a litle bit longer to improve further. Over the last couple of days his movement has got worse and he isn't able to stand. We take him out into the garden for some fresh air and exercise but he just lollops to one side and although his legs are moving he just pushes himself round in a circle whilst lying on his side. His comb and wattles are bright red and healthy looking, his eyes are clear and he has no problem with appetite. A chap at work (a fellow hen keeper) has since offered to rehome him but not while he's in such a sorry state as he doesn't have the time for "specialist care". I feel pretty helpless and sad for Oscar - I don't know if we should carry on or get him sent to chicken heaven. So, he has got an appointment at a vet this evening to get a professional opinion. I have to prepare myself for bad news but I do so with a very heavy heart. I know we cannot keep Oscar but I was looking forward to getting him back in tip top condition and rehomed happily. Ms Tilytinkle
Dear BocBoc Aw Bless You & Oscar. I think Your love & kindness gave Oscar a week of 'chicken heaven' on earth, even if for only a little while it must've felt glorious for him in comparison to what he experienced before. Thoughts with you later when taking Oscar to the vets. Ms TillywouldloveaCockeralbuttheneighbourswouldnt
Ain't Nobody Here
What a shame, poor Oscar . At least you did everything possible to make him better. I hope the vet can help him .
chelsea
Firstly, well done you for giving him some tlc he deserves I really hope the vet can do something, aside from the falling over thing he sounds quite healthy. Clutching at straws here ...but am hoping its an ear infection this can sometimes make hens go all disorientated. Please let us know how he goes. Ness3103
aww bless him, i hope the vet can help him . i also thought it could be an ear infection, i had a gerbil who fell over and walked in circles and it was an ear infection, course of antibiotics and she was fine. fingers crossed that's all it is. sending you and oscar biiiiiiig hugs

BocBoc
Goodness me - what a day!! Took Oscar to the vets and she was brilliant. She really knew her chickens!! We told her the story of how we came to have Oscar, how we couldn't keep him but wanted him to get better etc. Anyway, she confirmed that he had scaly leg, that he was a pretty old fella and that he was massively underweight. So, she prescribed him a course of antibiotics and best of all.........she's adopted him!! She lives in a big farmhouse with a spare stable so Oscar will live in there. She will give him time to have the antibiotics and she'll try to feed him up - if he's no better then she will do the right thing and send him to chicken heaven - but what a brilliant outcome! We couldn't have asked for anything better and despite my stress and dread today then bawling at the vets tonight, I'm really really pleased :)

BocBoc
Thank you everyone Tell you what - it made me appreciate our girls even more! I went striaght out to see them and shower them with corn and cuddles - followed by an extremely large glass of red wine (for me, not the chickens!) What a stressful day - but the best outcome so it was all worth it I got the vets details off here so thank you to whoever recommended Jamiesons in Ilkeston Edited July 20, 2009 by Guest
