i went to the pet shop today....

Recommended Posts

...and saw the most amazing leopard tortoise for sale . he is about 5 years old and is very friendly. he sat outside his viv with my two youngest girls for ages and he loved having the back of his shell rubbed!

i have successfully persuaded my hubby that we do need another pet (we already have 18!) and a tortoise is the way to go! we just need to get a viv built and i can bring him home! i'm going back to the shop on monday to leave a deposit on him. the shop selling him also build the viv's so i can have my own design made. it will take about 3 weeks and the shop will hold the tortoise til its ready. is that 8) or what!!!

Ah, congratulations :D

I would love a Leopard tort but sadly we just don't have the room for its outdoor or indoor enclosure.

They can get over 2 feet long so that's gonna be one heck of an enclosure!!!

We have a Hermanns hatchling and I wouldn't be without her, cute as a button :D

Have you had a look at the Tortoise Trust site? Got some good info on there. Also there are a couple of good forums I can give you the links to if you'd like?

Here's the Tortoise Trust one anyway........TT Site

The only problem with some pet shops (Some-not all  ) is that they quite often give the wrong advice and in a year or so you could end up with huge vet bills and a deformed/dead tortoise.

No doubt you are doing your home work and will not have any problems, just thought I'd offer advice anyway

Looking forward to the pics and congratulations :dance:

thanks for the advice, yes i am doing loads of research! the shop i'm getting him from are reptile specialists and we already have two ranking dragons from them who are very healthy so we are in good hands.

my daughters are very excited and i will post pictures when we get him.

i am now in the process of extending my wir so that the chickens have a bigger enclosure leaving the rest of the garden for us to house george in!

I would echo this advice - the tortoise trust do a wonderful job and have great advice. Not only do Leopard torts grow big but they do not tolerate damp or cold and can only be housed outside for a very short time each year in this country. I am sure you will have taken all this on board though as you already have reptiles :wink:

well there's bad news and good news!

the bad news is George had been sold when i went back to the shop to reserve him after getting the OK from the hubby :( I was gutted as he was loverly.

the good news is that my clever hubby has tracked down a pair of leopard torts and has reserved them for me  i will have them in a few weeks they are just over three years old and i can't wait.

i have now extended my WIR by another four feet and so my chickens have a huge private section of the garden and i have time to get the lawn back to normal before my torts arrive. (i want to make sure there are absolutly no poops left anywhere that the torts might eat). i haven't had to cut my grass all summer as the chickens have done an amazing job of keeping it trimmed! hopefully if i keep them off it now it will have time to grow enough so i can cut it and ensure nice fresh grass is left behind.

btw they're going to be called george and mildred!

Congrats on getting some leopard tortoises

but BEWARE they are really hard to look after,if the temperature is too cold or humidity is too high they get really ill, our leopard tortoise has cost us hundreds in vet bills.

Apparently they are the hardest breed to look after and your supposed to be lucky if they survive living with you for a year :o

Oh and don't keep tortoises in Vivariums,it give the respitary infections,i found this out when i first started with tortoises,my Hermanns became ill i couldn't understand why until i looked on google and found that vivs are bad for tortoises.

We're going to re-home our Leopard with the welsh mountain zoo once we move,my mum rang up and even they said that the leopards are the most expensive to look after.

Oh and Leopards don't need to be hibernated

Good Luck,

Raina

EDIT: forgot to add lol, you will need TONS of Limestone flour,as they grow so fast they need lots of calcium!

thanks raina

we are having a house specially built by the breeder that our torts will be able to wander in and out of.

they wont be outside much this time of year as it's getting colder and as for the damp we will do everything in our power to contol this.

i'm glad they dont hybernate, this was one of our reasons or choosing the breed, i don't think the kids would have the patience to wait for them to wake up!

i'll keep everyone posted with our progress x

thaks for the heads up about the vets bills... i'm now looking into insurance!

TBH, i don't think pet tortoises should be hibernated!

animals only hibernate in the winter, becasue the food they eat in the wild doesn't grow and it's too cold for reptiles.

in the wild hamsters would hibernate, but no one botheres to hibernate them as pets.

i don't hibernate Ishi, my uncle has kept tortoises for a few years and has never hibernated them.

Oh forgot to add,

Squirt the leopard LOVES boiled egg, we crush it up with then shells still on and he eats the lot lol

We put him in the shower once a day too, as they are prone to dehydrate (when they wee they dehydrate quite a bit) he loves it.

Oh and their food is free too

his faveorite is Clover & dandilion weeds.

He also eats

Pumpkin (without seeds,cooked)

Cucumber

Kiwi

tomato

Savanah Grass (buy this from e-bay)

He also ate a bit of cooked chicken once,we gave the dogs some but they didn't eat it,just took it out the back, then squirt found it
