mostin
Well, talk about a roller coaster . i went up the garden this morning, expecting the worst, but there she was, having a preen, and then drinking from the superglug . She still wouldn't eat any porridge so I started trying to give her more honey and avipro but she jumped into my basket and started trying to eat some corn on the cob, left over from tea the night before, that I was taking up for the other girls . She looked a hunched up again this afternoon when it started to rain, and it got cold. I brought her inside in the catbox, and she's spent the afternoon in front of the gas fire eating sweetcorn and drinking water. I've had to keep the lid on the box as she's tried to investigate the lounge a couple of times. I don't like my carpet, but it's not chicken proof . Fingers crossed. Chook n Boo Mum
I found with Hazel that when she had sour crop, if she was outside, although it wasn't exactly cold, her comb went blue and she got worse instantly, as soon as she was warm again she went red & although still very ill perked up a little, so she stayed in a box in our front room for 2 days before she escaped from the outside "sick bay" (I was going out & couldn't leave her indoors ) & she's been there ever since. The same with Buffie, one minute death's door, next minute stealing food ..do they realise what we go through for them ?! I hope May is ok this morning Sha x
Suzy
Hi Mostin, This sounds exactly like what has happened a couple of times to one of my hens (including the timing - only ever on a Saturday or a Sunday! )She's looked at death's door and then the next morning she seems so much better. With mine, I think she suffers very badly with soft eggs, as this, the clear poos, and lethargic state all happen at the same time. You are doing the right thing just getting her rehydrated. Regan stopped laying for 2 weeks after her last bout of whatever this is, and suddenly bloomed, loads of new feathers, and I thought she'd finally stopped laying, sadly not and she's started again, bless her. One bit of advice I would give.... phone the BHWT careline - they are only weekday but they have been so much help to me when I've been really worried about Regan. The lady who answered even gave me a mobile number for the weekend. Not that I used it but the thought was greatly appreciated and they are so helpful and kind. I hope little May pulls through. mostin
Thank you all, well, typical of life , I have had to go away for work, as has OH. Luckily May has gone to stay with Aunty Laurmurf in the lap of luxury . I have been getting hourly updates virtually all day on my mobile phone. Today she has been eating corn, tuna, sushi and chick crumbs, but she turned her nose up at the porridge . She's been drinking all by herself and toddling round their kitchen too . She had another down spell later this afternoon, but apparently perked up again, and is in no discomfort and is bright and alert. My other girls, cats and home are all being looked after by a good friend, but only another omleteer can give chicken TLC the way we all understand it. I'm not one for letting any creature "hang on" but she has shown such spirit and her eyes are still so bright, I just feel I owe her the chance to try to pull herself out of this if she can. Thank you so much Laurie, Please give my girl big cuddles from tonight as I can't be with her xxxxxxxxxxxxx

smokiechicken1969
couldnt wait to see if there was any update. i can just imagine her wondering around the kitchen and having treats in front of the fire. ahhh you are a dedicated and giving person. and she is a very special chicken. fingers crossed for the next couple of days. xxxx
laurmurf
and in this week's episode of Chook-ER..... We were only too glad, and quite honoured, to offer a chook-sitting service for our lovely mostin. hellymisscloud has been in the kitchen all day with May while I've been in and out. May is drinking well, really well - which is a huge relief to me 'cause I do so worry about dehydrated chooks. She's nibbling at the various treats that are offered to her: sushi was the Lurker's idea and it was surprisingly popular! Not eating huge amounts but then she's not using much energy, so I'm not too worried about that. She's been wandering around my kitchen, finding reflective friends to keep her company. hellymisscloud has brought a mirror down for her too. May has been listening to my chooks through the window and seems quite content. Basil's even had a nosey at her through the window and is intrigued... (teenage boy - older woman syndrome!) She did have her down moments this afternoon, and i did try getting her an appointment with my chook-vet, Dr Dishy, but he's not working 'til Friday evening. I know May's an older girl, and an ex-batt, but she really does have the look of a girl intemittently bothered by a softy.... i'm keeping my fingers crossed for May's mum that this is the case, cause she's really a lovely girl! (well, they both are! )

mostin
She has had another good day in the lap of luxury at Laurie's, she seemed quite put out when I turned up this evening to take her home . She is still eating and drinking fine, and was wandering round their kitchen when I was there. She is now home, in her own kitchen , with her head tucked under her wing all tucked up for the night. OH says he doesn't know he's going to explain this one to the accountant when he comes round tomorrow . I just said "tough" . I'll see how much Tuna and sweetcorn she can work her way through tomorrow. I am beginning to think she is getting very used to this life . She certainly won't touch her water anymore unless it has avipro in it, and then she wolfs it down .
Ain't Nobody Here
It's sounding pretty hopeful . I think you're in danger of having a house chicken though .

mostin
After begging and pleading to 5 vets this morning. I was getting a wee bit hysterical I think, I seriously asked if they would just consider her as a big budgie , I finally got an appt this evening with a vet in York who has seen chickens for Laurmurf before. He was so nice, even when May did a very explosive liquid poo all over him . he gave her an immediate antibiotic injection and some more to take home and syringe into her. The rest is up to May. He was worried it may have been coxoid but after studying the poo on the table he said he was 99% sure it wasn't, but he said if any of my other girls look even slightly off or have funny poo's to bring in an immediate stool sample and they will test the flock. It was so nice to be talked to as a worried pet owner, and not a freaky mad chicken woman. Thank you to you all for all your kind messages and support. She is still lapping up the avipro and honey, and now eating some Tuna.

(If you would recommend the vet I could add him to the Omlet vets list) Will do ANH . How she doing today Mostin? She's been tucking into some scrambled egg and we've just given her the first dose of her oral antibiotics no problem.
