Green/Eco Campsite

Recommended Posts

A colleague of my husband's is currently planning to change her career and run an eco-friendly campsite somewhere lovely, possibly Shropshire. As part of her planning for this she has put together a short survey about camping holidays and would be very pleased to hear from as many people as possible, even if like me, camping seems everything you DON'T want on a holiday.

DH has told her all about the Omlet forum and she has had a browse and is really impressed. One of her plans when she gets the place set up is to have hens and bees, so I'm sure she will be around on the forum!

Done

Is there a way to pass on further suggestions ?

We've camped at http://www.hiddenvalleypark.com/ a few times partly influenced by their environmentally friendly policy but there are things that niggle me and things I think they could do better.

My main niggle about hidden valley env policy is they say they promote recycling but they don't have recycling bins at each refuse point. Whilst I recycle everything I can at home it isn't practical to keep lots of recycling separate when camping unless the recycling points are close enough to drop it straight in so the reality was I sometimes ended up throwing away things that could have been recycled

A camp site with an airing/drying room would be wonderful

A lot of people use disposable bar-b-q's when camping which aren't very env friendly. Pitches (possibly premium pitches ?) with build-in permanent bar-b-q's and bags of env friendly charcoal in the shop to buy would be great. Alternatively could offer option of hiring a bar-b-q for the week.

Lots of camp sites discourage washing lines and have washing m/c's and dryers, but a washing line is much greener than a dryer ! If it was possible to design pitches so that a washing line was incorporated hidden behind tents/caravans it wouldn't look messy but would be green and practical.

However environmentally friendly the site it's still essential the loos and showers are nice and clean.

Thank you all, that's a wonderful response. I have asked DH to warn the lady of the Omlet effect!

Patricia - thank you especially. She will find your thoughts very helpful. She has taken a sabbatical from work to work out a business plan, including finding out what people really want and presumably then searching for a suitable place to buy. Your comments will be enormously helpful.

:D:D Thank you everyone.

DH has had an email from Sarah today saying:

Thanks so much! I really appreciate it - what a lovely group of

people! We had a great email from Patricia with some really useful

comments. It's so nice when people take the trouble.

She is very pleased that so many people have taken the trouble to complete the survey. There's time for more, so don't feel you've missed the chance. If you want to say anything else, such as caravans, as you can see, emails are very welcome.
