UPDATE! Jobs to fit around college

Recommended Posts

Well, I'm still unemployed. Although I have started college now, which is great, but I don't have any money...

My job search seems to have got even harder recently, with even less jobs to apply for compared to in the summer and I don't know what to do again. Overall I've probably applied for over 50 jobs since mid-June and got nowhere. I had a couple of interviews, but that's it. In Yeovil more shops are closing down or relocating than opening and Christmas temp jobs are very few and far between-I've applied for Boots, but that's about the only place who have started advertising here yet.

I just wondered if anyone else is in a similar situation...

Liz, I feel for you, really I do. I remember your posts when you first started looking for a job, so it must be frustrating to still be unemployed.

Maybe you should take a look at your C.V and see if there is anything missing that employers may be looking for? Could you phone the companies you applied at and ask if there are any reasons why you weren't successful in obtaining an interview? It may help for next time you apply for a job.

I know how hard it is, and the sad truth is, not many people are hiring this year :(. If the worst comes to the worst, you'll just have to sit tight and wait. Just remember though: good things come to those who wait.

:( You'll just have to keep trying for after college and at weekends.

Is there anyone that you know that needs a bit of help? I've been painting scenery this afternoon for someone I know, and often do little things like that.

If you ever get a no, ask for feedback XChicken04x said, I worked for another friend last year  in human resources dept. and they always said to ask for feedback so you can might have better luck next time.

What about volunteering in a charity shop - no money yet, but its something to go on your CV (and UCAS next year  ) and shows you're willing to help.

As you know Liz,Devon had a nightmare getting a job - was given the runaround by so many people & really gave up hope.

But this week, totally out of the blue & weeks after her interview,Waitrose phoned, the checkout manager called her in & she was offered a job after a brief informal chat while she was in her jeans & T shirt from college :D

All I can say is just keep plugging away, something WILL come up eventually.

You are a bright, capable & personable young woman, & some time very soon, someone will be delighted to offer you a position.

Make sure all the large companies have your CV, check every day for new openings with them online, & try for seasonal work as a stop gap.

Good luck xxx

Unfortunately with the number of people affected by redundancy etc, there are so many applications for shop work etc. and people are more inclined to stay put than move on.

Best advice would be to keep plugging away, apply for anything and everything, and maybe advertise as a 'parent's help' / odd-job woman / dog-walker etc?

Also soooo rude when they don't even bother to reply, not even a phonecall or a standard letter in the post. I went to an interview and they didn't even contact me :? .

It is annoying for you but the trouble is that many companies have now reduced their staff to a minimum and just don't have the resources to respond to the increased number of people applying to them for jobs. Usual thing is to put a note on application forms saying that only successful applicants will be contacted further, but if it is small print you might not notice.

You are more likely to get a response if you email your letter of application and CV as it is easier to send off a quick acknowledgement to an email than to type, print and post a letter.

If you've had an interview and haven't heard, it would be worth phoning them and asking for feedback. Maybe they have a waiting list and you are on it and will be contacted soon.

Do you know anyone who does recruitment and who could check over your CV and give you a bit of interview coaching?

Anyway good luck and keep trying.

Well done Liz! I was a Saturday girl at Boots & got loads of extra work during College holidays. You get 20% discount off Boots own brand & I think it was 10 or 15% off anything else. It was great for Xmas. You also get a uniform to wear. White top, navy skirt or trousers. There are bonus rewards for people who sell a lot too. I won a few of those too. You just have to be willing to go on the tills. They are very particular about products being clean & to the front of the shelves (pulling forward) - so you will have to do some dusting too. But it's a great place to work! Good luck!

Sounds positive. It's only temporary though, from November to January, but at least it will provide me with a few pennies if I get it! :D

Well done Liz.:clap: Boots take on a lot of Christmas temps but once you are in you might find out about other opportunities when they need people for those difficult to staff shifts, eg Sundays and late night shopping. Also, I'm sure they look at the people who have temped over Christmas when they are filling vacancies later in the year.

Well I had the interview today. I think it went ok, I'm not really sure though. I should find out next Tuesday anyway.

I just wish there were more independents in Yeovil, as then I'd have more variety to do and wouldn't be working for a huge chain, but oh well.

Is Denners still there Liz?

My Mum used to work there :D

Yes, but they don't have any jobs I could do at the minute. I'm hoping they'll open a Joules clothing concession in the Yeovil branch at some point, as Denners is now owned by Beales and have 3 other joules concessions!

good luck on the job front. just remember: 8 hours per week is considered optimum. If you work more than 15 hours per week, this will affect your grades by on average, one grade per subject :!:

I know. I've been told this before. I'd only really want to work 1 day a week anyway, or two afternoons.

Good luck Liz! I'm another Boots girl - spent a year with them when I left school, really enjoyed it! 8)

ES who has just turned 18 has managed to get some work for a local training centre for the blind. He does 6 hours over 2 days and just does all the odd jobs, maintenance, gardening and muscle work that the lady owner can't do herself! She works him hard but he enjoys himself, especially the cash!
