Firework night!

Recommended Posts

What do other people do with their hens on Firework night :?:

I can't really bring mine into the house, as one book has suggested, but wanted to know if I should cover the coop with something more sound proof (if I can find anything) :)

Do they get very frightened by the noise :?:

They don't seem to be that bothered about noise, except when I was mowing the lawn round them the other day.

My OH gets quite close to them with his motorbike, when he is putting it away, which they don't really flinch at.

I am just worried that they will go off lay if they get too frightened :anxious:

Mine gave me a thoroughly filthy look when I peeped in to check them last year, so I'd just have a quick check to be sure they are ok...just listening outside the cube would give you an idea.....quiet:happy sleeping chooks, flapping:upset chooks who need attention, so deal with in any way you are able...... then leave them to their beauty sleep :anxious: ! If you need to bring them in for a few hours they'd be fine in a cardboard box somewhere quiet, then tucked back into the cube when the fireworks are finished.

Last year being my first bonfire night with chooks, I went outside and stood near the cube ready to make lots of soothing noises to my poor panicked girls, only to discover they slept soundly through the whole thing  not one peep from any of them.

Had two cats arguing over who could get furthest under the bed though ... :D

I have started playing my "sounds" cd when the girls are around, at least then the noises "should" it wake them will not be "alien" I have 4 that do spook at the unknown, need to keep doing iit for the dog, who from now on in has to be taken out 3 or 4 ish for her last pee as the idiots often let them off on the way home from school, and anytime after. (luckily she has a dog flap & can go out at 3 am if she wants)

I've never done anything to my girls on firework night in all the 3 + years we have had them.

I do have an old inner of a dog basket sat flush on top of my cube roof (for sound proofing as they are loud during summer) and I will just leave that on top over the winter also.

We only worry if our next door neighbour is having his annual fireworks party, in which case we put them in a big cardboard box in the kitchen. We then check the garden in the morning for errant bits of plastic that seem to come from some of the fireworks before letting the girls back out. We keep the kitchen dark and they don't seem to mind.
