Only had my chooks 5 days and......

As far as I am aware, the Allotments Act refers to allotment land only. 'Any land' in this instance would therefore relate to any allotment land, not residential. So it is perfectly permissible to keep chickens on any allotment you fancy but there may well be local restrictions on keeping chickens in a garden.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news about this, but councils are not always accommodating at the best of times, so might not help your cause if you quote the Allotments Act and it turns out not to be applicable to residential land/gardens.

I really do hope you come to an agreement with them though so you can keep your chooks.

Not sure about that. Remember the 'Gateshead 2' (the elderly couple) who were to be evicted from their property for keeping two hens? Their Soliciter found a loophole using the Allotments Act - and they have kept their hens. :D

That's great news, what a relief, even if it's only temporary at the moment. I agree though that she would probably have been much firmer with you today had there been no room for compromise.

Did she say that someone had complained or was it a chance 'peer over the hedge' type of discovery?

Anyway, thinking of you and your girls, good luck.

I hope it sorts itself out - we live in a council property and as far as i know you just have to ask for permission, not that i bothered. I have very good neighbours though and buttered them up with the prospect of eggs!

It's a shame that people have to spoil things for others. :(

We have some wasteland at the back of our house and the path runs up the side of our house. She said she was inspecting that and saw them through the fence. Im not too sure about that though because she asked me how many i had and the girls are always out so its clear i have 3. They are penned up at the moment till the bigger WIR is built so they arent wreaking havoc in the garden!

But hopefully she will see that they are well cared for and pose no threat of disease or whatever else she's worried about.

Myself and the OH have been busy building a WIR for the girls this weekend. Its raining now so we have called it off until it settles, but its coming along nicely!

We have started to build it on the decking as it the flattest bit of the garden at the mo lol

We should hopefully have it finished by next week if the rain holds off. It will be ready in time for the visit! Here's a piccy of what it looks like so far - its going to be a little bigger than this, but this is as far as we have got at the mo (hope the photo isnt too big!)

Thats looking really good Goff. :D Dont want to put a dampner on this at all but do you suffer from foxes in your neck of the woods? Its just that it looks like chicken wire on your run and this isnt fox proof :( I would hate for anything to happen to your girls after all that you are going through to keep them, :)

We haven't seen any foxes, but we know the chicken wire isnt fox proof is just what we had left over from the stuff we bought to stop our dog digging up our veggie planters!

The chicken wire is on the inside of our WIR and the plan is to get the run up in time for Council Lady's visit with the chicken as it is, then if there is time and the welded mesh arives in time we can put it on the outside - doubly reinforced!

We just wanted something up just to show her when she comes to see my girls.
