Biker Chick
Hiya All, Thought I'd let you know that I've changed my user name from Sioux 1 to Biker Chick There is a reason that I've changed......... I've been trying for a while now to pass my motorbike test. My hubbie is a motorbike instructor for a living (he has the patience of a saint, bless him) and he had been taking me out on a 125cc bike, unfortunatly I failed my bike test back in April, due to nerves not the ability and he has been trying to talk me in to trying out a larger 500cc bike. The idea being that I would feel safer on it and wouldnt feel all the bumps and pot holes in the road. Well, I finally had a little go on the bigger bike on Saturday, just around the car park and I LOVED IT. Sooooooo, yesterday, I actually braved a ride out on the road. I have to, by law, go out with him and we are linked by radio, but it was such an amazing experience. Will, defo have another go at my test, so please wish me lots of luck, and hope the "nerves" dont strike again. How cool would it be, for me, a 40..... er something, to be riding out on a bigger bike!!

Olly
oh wow - well done you! I can't answer for bikes but I've always preferred big cars and get very annoyed with this idea that all women for some reason prefer small cars. I need a big boot space (to fit Eglus in ), I like driving fast (within reason) and I pride myself on being able to park anything, anywhere. I did my bike test ten years ago, for various reasons I have not really ridden a bike much since then, but it is definitely one of the best things I have ever done - I can still recall the cheesy grin that broke out when the instructor said I had passed! You go girl.

Ygerna
Do it I've got my bike license and in my experience bigger bikes are safer. You are visually larger and most importantly you have the option of power to get yourself out of trouble because hitting the brakes in an emergency is not always the best option on a bike. (not advocating speeding here, just that sometimes you need the ability to manoever past things which you simply cannot do on a 125, because of a secondary danger on the road such as mud, ice, even the white lines) Riding is fantastic, I miss it terribly
Redwing
woo hoo well done and a great new name Hubby has just passed his CBT and we have now got a 125cc scooter, he has avoided all driving through nerves over the years so this is a big step forward, he is now smitten and wants a 'proper' bike for his 40th birthday in two years time
Seagazer
Congrats on the name change Biker Chick and good luck with your next test. Let us know how you get on. I'm just a passenger on OH's bike, well to be honest I've only been on it twice now (awaiting more safety gear) and it is very exciting

Sheilaz
Like the name! Wow, that's a big leap from 125 to 500, I'm glad you enjoyed the trial run. I was saving up for a 250 or maybe 175 in my teens but then changed boyfriends. New one (OH) had a car & I abandoned my dream of a bike. I can see the sense in feeling more confident on bigger than 125, and this sounds a great opportunity. Wishing you all the best, do keep us posted. Biker Chick
Thanks all for the words of encouragement. I shall be going out for another ride tomorrow afternoon I probably havent picked the best time of year for doing this, what with the dark evenings and the colder days......but, oh well, never mind....tis now or never
Snowy
Wow, well done, I'm very impressed! I tried riding a bike once - a 250cc. I went about 5 yards then tipped over and it was so heavy (and I'm only likkle) I couldn't stand it up again Never tried again

Ain't Nobody Here
Cool new name . (I used to ride a 50cc moped - not quite so cool .)
BeckyBoo
You go girl! I've got my licence, used to have a very old Suzuki GS 550 - it was matt black with 4 into 1 exhaust, looked very mean and made a lovely noise (plus it was the only one I could reach the ground on! ) Anyway, I found that bigger bikes sit better on the road, they're steadier, not so flimsy - my old 125 (and we're talking 20 odd years ago so VERY old ) felt like it would blow away in the wind! Once you pass and the cold clear days are here you'll be whizzing along having the time of your life! Keep safe and don't forget to ride like everyone else on the road is an idiot, cos mostly when it comes to bikes - they ARE! docsquid
Good luck with getting your full licence. I've ridden motorbikes for many years - every size from 90cc to 1000cc, including doing race school and track days. I have to say that the larger bikes are easier to ride by and large, although some, for example the Ducati bikes I have owned, have "character" which means they have foibles that make riding in town a bit harder. A 500cc bike designed for beginners will be easier to get to grips with than a learner 125cc bike. Just make sure you get some proper lessons and you will do fine with the test. I've just sold my bike so no motorbike at present, but it is definitely a skill I enjoyed getting and I enjoyed riding very much. If I get another bike it will be a less sporty bike - something like a Triumph Street Triple. The "docsquid" of my name comes from motorbikes. I'm a retired doctor (hence the "doc") and SQUID is a motorcycling acronym for "suicidally quick irresponsible and dangerous". It was an ironic term given to me by a motorcycle club, since I am none of those things!
