Fireworks!

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys

I just needed to have a whine! And after having a look through these pages I thought that this would be a good place to start! so here's my first entry in the nesting box.

I have been sat here in my study listening to fireworks going off!!! :x And it's not the first night I have heard them either. Don't people (being polite rather than saying yobs/louts/etc) have better things to spend money on. I dread to think how bad it's going to get given that it's only 14 October.

My Dad, who lives in a small village thinks I must be imagining it. I have suggested that he come and stay with me in Birmingham, just to listen, but strangely he's declined the invitation!

So that's my first whine over with - hope you don't make me feel too welcome - you might just have to listen to me going on about my in-laws if you do! so don't say that I didn't warn you!

You know I thought it was wierd or a coincidence that you had them as we do here and wondered if there was some sort of festival going on ... then I spotted your location!

You can't be far from us then! I can smell a bonfire too, wonder whats going on.

Might it be for Diwali which is 17th October?

I hadn't thought of that - it may well be. I hadn't appreciated that the date moved so much, I thought it was usually in November. Having just googled the dates, next year it falls on 5 November!

I think its October as a patient told me it was - round here they start in October and carry on into Nov. I must remember to cover rabbit hutch and get nervous tabby cat in. Do hens go off the lay - not having any I wondered how it sounded in an Eglu with fireworks - I doubt we'd know unless you'd squeezed into one :anxious:

If you can move the glu a bit out the way, I would.

You could put a thick picnic blanket over the top of the eglu and run, still leave a gap for air, to get rid of some of the noise.

They may stop laying for a day or two because of the shock, but the eglu is quite thick so they should be fine as it is, and never know anything

They have been going off here now for 3 nights! oh and in the day as well! which is even more a waste of money! I do love fireworks but still think they should only be on bonfire night! one of my cats is petrified of them but the chickens and my other cat seem to love them! which is probably good seeing as there is a good few weeks until the actual night!

My chickens weren't bothered by them last year, the neighbours behind me had a firework party and I found the lawn littered with rockets etc the next day, but it didn't seem to affect laying.

One of my cats is terrified of loud noises though, she wasn't with me last November so I don't know how she will react, the other one is not over-keen and last year around 5th November it was pretty much constant bangs and crackles several nights in a row.

I really wish they were only permitted in organised displays and not sold over the counter - the potential for misuse is so great, and I know that as in every year, there will be several unfortunate children (and adults) ending up in A&E because they ignored the instructions or because someone else fooled around. Sorry to be a spoiler-of-the-fun, but if I were Prime Minister they'd be banned!

3 nights so far this week! Grrrrr.

It's not pretty fireworks that I have issues with (to some extent)

it's the loud ones that send shockwaves that I dislike.

That said. Last year I shut the Eglu door and checked the chickens a few times. Once I'd ascertained that they didn't seem upset by the fireworks I thought it best not to continue to disturb them.

The other night when the fireworks started my cat came and found me and climbed onto my knee. Not an unusual place to find her, it was the way she came straight to find me, it was obvious she was upset by the noise.

I'd prefer if the sale and use of fireworks was more strictly controlled.

Ditto...and I wish our neighbours would let us know when they are having family dos in the garden with the obligatory noisy things so we can make sure the dogs are indoors & the chooks shut in their houses.....we've started closing the older bantams (cube red) and the Bufflings (blue eglu) door due to the chill in the air ....... the (pink eglu) nursery is shut every night anyway as they are diddywee and quite young and the big girls (cube lilac) & (cube orange) doors will be shut when the fireworks really kick off across the fields...probably tomorrow  !

I don't think there were any tonight, except the first organised display about 5 miles south of us, as our eldest dog was quite normal rather than a quivvering wreck by the front door :anxious:

Sha x

Thanks for the advise.

Well Diwali came and went on Saturday with fireworks uptill midnight my 4 ex batts seemed ok and laid 3 eggs on Sunday which is about average. Today we had 2 and 1 soft broken in the nesting box, so if thats it I think we got off quite lightly we will see tomorrow if thats it.

I had a firework thrown towards me this afternoon when I was in the garden :( Luckily it is a bit windy so it didn't hit its target, it landed in the field and then went off. Lots of bright blue sparks scattered in all directions some of which landed in the boot of my car which was open, no damage as far as I can see. The Chickens had been scratching about in the field 5 minutes earlier but came back when they saw me filling up their feeders.

The mindless idiots were driving a Corsa I didn't get the registration number. They were lighting the fireworks and throwing them out of the window. I hope they light one and then drop it in the footwell before they have a chance to throw it

I had seen the car a few minutes before in the Castle carpark and noticed a lot of smoke drifting down the lane, I thought they were wheel spinning the car or revving it up and causing the exhaust to smoke, it must have been a firework although I didn't hear anything as the Tornados were coming into land and they are so noisy. The lane we live on ends at the car park, they must have thought no one would be about and then they saw me.

I haven't reported it to the police :? not sure they would be able to do anything anyway.
