Sunshine
On Wednesday when i was doing my volunteering at Oxfam i walked up the 2nd set of stairs and my left clicked at every step and then really hurt when i got to the top. I then stretched it like i was told to do before doing sport and it stopped hurting. Ever since then my left knee has clicked on every step when i walk up stairs. It isn't painful but i don't like hearing it click so i have taken to stepping up the stairs on my right foot and then bringing my left up after to the same step. I went horse riding on Thurs and apart from getting on it was fine as we didn't really do much trot which is what i thought would make it click. Any ideas what it might be? I'm thinking that because its not painful it will just go away(hopefully sooner rather than later) I am from a family that nevers visits the doctors, we would all just rather sit it out with medicine from the supermarket. chick wiggle
Hi, how old are you Sunshine? We have been to the hospital today with my daughter Megan who is 14. Her knee (also left ) has been hurting her and clicking for months. After seeing the doctor and getting a refferal to hospital, she had x rays etc today. Apparently it is caused by her bones growing quicker than her cartilage. She is going to go to physio for excercises and hopefully it will get better soon. Not much else you can do apparently. I would say, if it doesnt get better, go see you GP.
Sunshine
I'm 20. Its funny my sister has had a similar thing with her shoulder and she went for tests etc and they just said it was because she was growing, she is 13. I presumed i had finished growing by now. I might give it until Wed and if its still clicking then i will make an appointment. Plus i want to know that going horse riding etc isn't going to make it worse. At least then i might have an idea of what it is (can you tell i'm trying to talk myself into going to the doctors! )
chick wiggle
Yeah, I dont like going either. My DD loves her horse riding too, but Im sure thats not relavant . Also been 20 i wouldnt imagine its the same thing so best to get it checked out if its no better. Good luck
Snowy
Mine do that too Sunshine - I mentioned it to the physio at work and basically it's because I'm old and fat Seriously though, it is quite common and could just be due to a bit of overuse and should settle down on it's own. If it doesn't, definitely worth getting it checked out - a bit of physio should sort it.

Have to laugh as that is just what they say to me and I am going for physio assessment later this week! - Problem is sore sore knee is not condusive to exercise!! - hence the fat bit!!! kitbag
I am 16 and have also had this! I would say it's just your bones growing - you don't stop growing until you are 21 - 22!
Gem_Seb
Up util the age of 24 my right knee was really painful and clicked a lot esp when walking up stairs! i had spouts every few weeks where it would ache and i woke up a few times in the night with what felt like cramp in my knee, i then went to the docs and she said it was because my bones were still growing, girls bones still keep growing until your early to mid twenties.. Im 26 now and 'touch wood', i havent had a problem for about a year now... although they still do click occasionally.
Sheilaz
One knee has been clicking going upstairs for about 10 years, and my bones def. aren't growing! Although it irritates me, it doesn't hurt, & I assume it's age related wear on the cartilage, so I try & ignore it.
Egluntyne
Could be a cartilage thingy. OS's knees creak and crack quite a lot for that reason. Too much hockey.
Seagazer
My left knee does that too. Now I can't drive too far in a manual car as it feels like something is going to pop in my knee, also when I'm on exercise bikes - hence I don't do that anymore. I think its cartlidge or ligaments, apparently I have loose ones. Probably better to go and get it checked though.
Alis girls
My rt knee creaks and I can click my right ankle which drives Oh mad esp when I do it in bed I am old but not fat. I think its wear and tear from the job. Cant take cod liver oil as it gives me indigestion. I could fill this box with my ailments burt wont
JustMyCluck
My knees used to do that too and I thought it was overuse as I did a lot of cycling, riding, walking etc but I had to get orthotics because of a foot problem and that cured my knee cracking too. The Dogmother
Both mine do too - knackered cartilege from too much sport
jomaxsmith
My knees click on the stairs and I fall into neither the 'still growing' or 'old and fat' or indeed the 'overexercising' categories! I read somewhere that if the clicking is painless it's air bubbles and nothing to worry about. Jo
WarrensWorld
My left shoulder clicked, then my right shoulder clicked and started to ache. A few months later my right knee started to click X-Rays showed it was arthritis. Several injections of steroids and lubricants later, Dr Alice tells me that eventually I'll have to have my knee replaced..... This weather is not helping. edit: Typo error. chooklady
My left knee makes strange noises when going up stairs, sounds disgusting but it doesn't hurt so I don't worry about it!
Sunshine
Well i went to the doctors last Thurs and she wobbled my knee about and said it was lax. When she did move the kneecap up and down it felt really loose compared to my right knee. he doctor then said she was going to talk to another doctor who is specalised in knees to see what the best course of action would be. Then this morning i got a leter saying that i have an MRI scan on the 6th Dec(a Sunday!) on my knee. I'm very impressed that it has come through so quickly and that i don't have to wait ages for an appointment. Mum told me today that if we hadn't heard anything from the NHS next week then i would have had it done privately like our eye check ups/operations. So slightly nervous but good on the NHS for being so quick.

Seagazer
Wow thats great that you've got it so quick. I must admit that the NHS seems to be getting quicker in general. We went private with ES, we'd waited a couple of weeks and hadn't received anything from the hospital. When ES went and asked to go private the doctor's surgery hadn't even sent a letter yet to the hospital
