HENthusiastic
I received a text from a friend asking if I could take 3 ex-batts for a colleague of hers who has had them for 3 months. AParently she can't keep them because they keep escaping from her garden. I agreed to take them because me and OH have been talking about getting some from BHWT anyway. We were happy to help because we've got the space and we wanted to help out. We have got an integration pen and housing ready for them before they go in with the other girls. Then I got a rather embarassed text from my friend saying that the lady wanted £10 for the hens and did we want their housing for £100. Oh and by the way, there are only 2 now becaues one has gone missing . Now, somebody remind me how much BHWT ask for their girls??? OH had a good idea, I texted back saying I would happily help out by taking her girls for her and that I would happily donate some money to BHWT . I'm still waiting to hear back. I hope the girls are okay.
mostin
That all sounds very odd . Most chicken people I know, if they weren't able to care for their girls for any reason would just want to know they were going to a good home, especially ex-batts . For that amount of money, the person would be making a profit , this does not seem right?
Space Chick
I think they are taking advantage

I agree. She is taking the mick somewhat IMO.
Redwing
Thats very cheeky! Its hard enough to rehome hens at the end of their layiing life as it is so to find someone happy to take them is great
HENthusiastic
I'm glad you all seem to think and feel the same way I did. And what about the fact that she has 'lost' one of them!?!? . You'd have thought she would just want the poor remaining two re-homed asap before they get 'lost' and come to a horrible end. I'm feeling a bit guilty that I didn't just say I'd pay the money just to get the girls out of there and into a good home. . Hopefully I'll hear something today. Egluntyne
Blimey....what a cheek. Your offer is spot on. If she holds out for her price, the escape committee will have done its work. *tuts*
Dappy Chick
I thought that if you signed up to take on Ex-batts you did so for life & there is a clause about re-selling???? They should be reported in my eyes - that is disgusting. I had a call from someone wanting 4 ex-batts but he had not had chickens before, because I thought it was a really good home and I knew if he could not cope he would bring them back I let him have 4 of my well established, well feathered girls as I did not think he would cope with some bald ones straight away. Not only did I let him have them for nothing I also sent him off with a feeder, drinker, 10kgs of food, corn & grit - this way I knew the girls would have everything - I did not think for one second that I would expect him to pay for them. mostin
I hope you hear something from her today Hen. I know this will be upsetting you and making you feel guilty, as it would any of us . Big hugs xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

BeckyBoo
It's a bit rude really, sounds like they weren't in any way prepared for keeping chooks - you have to secure the garden if you're going to let them out for goodness sakes. I'm picking up 4 ex-barn hens on Sunday from the BHWT and had to ask how much to donate and they said the going rate was £3-4 per hen or whatever you could afford. Bit bloomin' much asking a tenner each if you ask me. Poor lost chook too, Mr Fox is probably licking his lips BeckyBoo

HENthusiastic
Thanks guys . Me and OH are now feeling a bit unsure about the way things have gone. We haven't heard anything from her. I kind of wish Id just agreed to pay for them, just because I want the poor girls to be okay. I hope shes looking after them okay.
Jools
She sounds like the kind of person who shouldn't have had them in the first place. I hope it all works out.

mostin
Try not to worry about them Hen, I know it's hard . Give it a week for the chicken poop to build up and then casually mention the subject to your friend again, and see how the land lies.
