Charlottechicken
Graham, is that your own pic? It is a nice one ! I am so out of astronomy now I didn't even know there was a comet going over that was visible to the naked eye! Is it following the sun at present, as the pic looks a bit like a sunset? I stood on a freezing cold beach for an hour and took about 60 shots - this was one of the best. It is following the sun and it can only be see at sunset - although I think I read somewhere that it can be seen just before sunrise too. It was visible tonight for roughly 40 minutes. Jools
Oh boy, I wish I'd known, I'd have shivvered outside to see it! I subscribe to the aurorawatch thingy so I get warnings of possible Northern Lights - only seen one good one so far a few years ago, but still living in hope of some more ! Charlottechicken
Thanks Graham, I will look out for it tomorrow night! Now I remember why I was looking for a nice digital SLR camera, it would be good to get back into astronomical photography again (although I only ever played at it)! What type of camera do you have if you don't mind me asking?

Not too expensive either (still worth more than my car though ). I would really love a digital SLR

I would really love a digital SLR The D40 is a great camera with a limitation - it can only be used to autofocus with lenses that have their own autofocus motor. This significantly reduces your options on which lenses you can use with it. But that doesn't necessarily mean it's a problem - it all depends what lenses you want to use, and you could focus manually with lenses that don't have their own motor. The D50 is now discontinued but can be picked up at 'sale prices' (and it doesn't have the D40 autofocus limitation). Ditto the Nikon D70s - this too can be had at bargain prices as it has been replaced by the D80.
Charlottechicken
Thanks for that info Graham. I would only use the standard lens usually supplied with the camera, I found it easier to keep one on my old Praktica Nova II rather than lug a load of lenses around and keep swapping and changing, and managed to take lovely close ups of plants/animals and at the other end, time lapses of Orion and some comet photos, transit of Venus, even got some of the eclipse of the sun showing sunspots as well! no - it's the other way around.. the D40 is an upgrade of the D50... I suppose that's mens logic is it
The Dogmother
Ahh, so that must be the comet that Phil has been banging on about - he's been out with his telescope tonight now that it's clear. He'll be dead jealous of this photo, thanks Hon x

One Man Banned
Great picture Graham, Phil, the Comet at MK is not as nice as the Comet at Gloucester We wouldn't stand a chance of seeing it here, been far too cloudy and wet and horrible to look up! Guest
Awww, thanks! Well, no sightings today - it's been awful weather here. There was some blue sky at 3pm, but by the time I had gone down the beach (armed with camera and tripod), there was a huge bank of cloud moving in. The Dogmother
You're lucky to have seen any blue sky at all today It has been very windy and stormy here, with floods and trees down all over the place.
