Space Chick
And very glamorous she looks too ANH Also knowing that Poppy has met the grade it saves me trying to get a photo of Sarah Jane my Speckledy, who is having a mini moult, so I would have had to have caught her "good side"

Jools
I looked at your signature and saw Cuckoo Marans. But I have to tell you that Poppy isn't a Cuckoo Marans. Not a bog standard Cuckoo Marans anyway. Oh no! I think you may have a Silver Cuckoo Marans there and I'm jealous!! She is gorgeous. There are photos here of the different Marans colour-ways ..... aka My Wishlist!

Ain't Nobody Here
Jools, I'll have to change my signature . I've always been a bit confused as to what she is . James is putting her in as a Speckeldy - is that another name for a Cuckoo Maran ? Maybe I should do a poll - "Identify the chicken breed" . Laura & CTB
Well just dont tell her ANH - the last thing she needs with all this fame is an identity crisis!
Jools
I must admit that my first thought was one of the Cuckoo Marans hybrids too, until I found the Silver Marans photo! Depending on which company has produced them they have names like Speckledy, Cuckoo Nova, Cuckoo Star or even Cuckoo Maran Hybrid. They are definitely a cross though, a selectively bred hybrid, rather than a pure bred English Cuckoo Marans. What she is will probably depend on where you got her. If she's from a hybrid supplier, then she's one of the very pretty hybrids, but if she's from a Marans breeder, then she's looks very Silver Cuckoo Marans to me. However, I've never seen one in the flesh so I'm only going on internet pictures!! I have a Silver Sussex bantam cockerel and a Cuckoo Marans bantam hen and I'm already wondering if their offspring would look anything like Poppy. There are some links here if you're interested in looking. Cuckoo Nova and Silver Nova pics Speckledy pic Speckled Star pic They are all the same thing which I think is selective breeding from the very best laying Cuckoo Marans and Barred Plymouth Rocks, except the Silver Nova which looks more Silver Sussex-like. You do find some that look like pure bred Marans in colour but the giveaway is usually the earlobe. Marans never, ever, ever have a white earlobe. The Dogmother
I have a beautiful cuckoo marans miniature, but she wouldn't thank me for posting her photo at the moment as she's moulting! Sadie coems from show lines, but isn't 'perfect'.... she is to me though as she lays the most gorgeous deep brown, glossy eggs. Poppy is beautiful ANH. debbier
Can someone just clear up a bit of terminology here for me? Is a single "maran" actually called a marans? I've figured it should be, from reading the breed sites etc. , but a lot of places seem to call them maran. Just wondering!
Seagazer
Gorgeous photo, how many attempts did it take to get the photo?

The Dogmother
They come from the Marans region in France, hence the name
