The history as described here is interesting; first trifle had no sponge, and 60 years later the addition was bread, not cake, soaked in alcohol.

 

Personally, so long as there's a home for the % by volume content, I'm easy (and there's another image for chickychickychick-ENN )

With sponge, without fruit and alcohol and it has got to be Birds not homemade.

 

So from the bottom of the dish to the top....... sponge, jelly, custard, dream topping, sprinkles. Perfect

 

I have to agree I hated trifle until I tried Birds. I love Birds custard and hate trifle with sherry in it The trifle sponges you get with Birds are quite light and not grainy , I hate that grainy texture that you get with some, so I have voted without.

 

My OH made a delicious trifle in the summer that he made his own fresh strawberry jelly for, it was gorgeous

Has to be Birds custard - the others are bleh. With sponge and lots of strawberry jam - or swiss roll. Tons of sherry (although I did rather go ooooooooooooooh at the rum twist ). No jelly no how no way bleh bleh bleh!

All this talk about trifle is making me . Being a northern (ok north of Watford) lass I come from a family of big trifle consumers. My aunt brings one down the M1 - no mean task with uncles driving believe me - every Xmas for OH who is deprived of the stuff. Visions of trifle over the M1 and cars skidding on it fill me with dread I was a major disappointment to the family as I refused point blank to eat the stuff. Having said that so do my offspring. I do like the idea of some of Delias alternate trifle concoctions thou so all isnt lost.

Isn't it a bit like Tia Maria - sort of - can't remember - so long since I had proper alcohol. Er, apart from last weekend with some Pimms (or should I say Plums?).

Think I prefer Tia Maria though - mixed with vodka and coke for a Black Russian! Now that would be a nice trifle - just leave out the coke.
