dottyhen
Hello Omleteers!! Have been proud owner of and Dotty & Priscilla since July & thanks to this informative website, have not had to ask advice before. However, now stumped re Priscilla, She went broody in August & I let her come out of it on her own after nearly a month - wormed them both & she started laying again. She laid about 4 eggs then stopped She doesn't seem to have an appetite & even turns her beak up at live mealworms! She stands with her neck down in her body making her look like she has no neck & she has lost lots of weight & is quite scrawny now Also am just worming them again at the moment. She is bright eyed her feathers are shiny. I have given them both all the recommended extras (garlic, spice, etc, etc - spent a fortune of them ) but now concerned that she will not be strong enough to survive the winter Any ideas good people?? Thanks Alison Edited December 8, 2009 by Guest
Guest
have you given her the once over to check her crop, check for mites etc? Is she moulting? Is she still eating at all? is her breathing okay? If she's still eating I'd try and get some fattening things into her, maybe some chick crumb or try mashed potato mixed with some tuna and a bit of avipro mixed in would be a good idea? maybe a visit to the vet to check her out might be a good idea if she's been like that for a while. badgerbluebadger
I would take her to the vets. My girl Ella stopped laying and would stand in the corner and not eat. I took her to the vets and they advised me egg had broken inside her and I had to have her put to sleep
Cinnamon
Hi dottyhen What are you worming them with....Flubenvet or a different treatment? I only ask because it sound like classic behaviour of a hen with worms, & Flubenvet is really the only medical treatment for the condition that works well. dottyhen
have you given her the once over to check her crop, check for mites etc? Is she moulting? Is she still eating at all? is her breathing okay? Poet - thanks for reply. Yes have checked her over & her crop is OK & no mites (everything dusted with DE regulary including birds!) No she isn't moulting She is eating a little but not as much as Dotty who is the like the avian version of a Dyson!! Her breathing is fine as well! They are both wormed on Flubenvet (have beeen putting it in their feed, but will try the grape method I thin to make sure she is getting a dose!) Will try her with some potatoe or spaghetti - will separate her & feed her on her own. A trip to vets might be on the cards me thinks!! Guest
she could possibly be egg bound or have some sort of egg problem if she's not laying, judging from what you've said i think it's best to take her to the vet, good luck x
chelsea
I agree that if you have checked her over and eliminated all other possibilities (worms, lice, moulting etc) that a trip to the vet may be a good idea. She may have an underlying condition that may require some antibiotics to perk her up. Do you have any Avipro? - tis good stuff for under the weather animals. Really hope she's back to her chirpy self soon.
dottyhen
Do you have any Avipro? - tis good stuff for under the weather animals. Where can I get Avipro from? Just looked on FoF & Omlet shop but cna't see it Just bought some grapes & going to worm them individually so I know that Priscilla is getting dose. Is it possible to overdose Flubenvet tho'? As was going to leave Flub in food & dose with daily grape or would this cause problems?? Thanks again for replies Alison
Guest
your vet will have some, it's used for other species too x
sandyhas3chucks
I just dumped the 1kg of food with oit in and reverted to the grape. From th bumpf you have to REALLY give loads to Od. But it is difficicult to know if you are doing the right thing in worming a poorly girl too. I have one like yours but she is old. Retfords had poop sample Froday, hoping for a resiult tom. good luck
Egluntyne
Sounds as if you have covered all the bases, so a trip to the vet might be a good idea. Is she wheezy or rattly at all?
dottyhen
Sad update Took Priscilla to vets & although no obvious illness etc vet said unlikely to make recovery -so decision was made for her to be PTS On look out for a couple of POL's now to keep Dotty company.
