War Horse

Recommended Posts

Have you seen it? I went last night, and it was superb! I've been to numerous London shows, and this is one of the - if not THE - best I've seen.

I thought it would be a bit twee - the story of a boy whose horse gets sent to be a cavalry horse in WW1, and he goes over to try and find it. And it was done wioth "puppet" horses.

I had expected large "puppets", or "hobby horse" type things, but I was wrong. The so called "puppet" horses were larger than real horses, and were absolutely magnificent. Every detail of the horses movement, reactions, ear flicks, were meticulously recreated.

I don't want to say too much...actually, that's not true, I want to give you a blow by blow account of how great (and simple) the battle effects were, how emotional it was, but I don't want to risk spoiling it.

If you get the chance, go and see it. I don't imagine for a moment that everyone would be moved to tears by it (although there were a lot of us, women and men, who were), but I also can't imagine that anyone would go to this and come out thinking it was a waste of an evening.

Anyone else been? or going?

I have this booked for April.

My daughter has been twice and was more than moved to tears by it.

It's based on a book by Michael Morpurgo and he himself was overwhelmed by the adaptation onto stage.

There was an excellent programme about the making of the play on the tele fairly recently.

The expertise and devotion to realism shown by the puppeteers is legendary.

I am looking forward to it immensely.

Edited to say it's here on 4OD

Hi Clur

I think it might be too old for your 8 year old, but I'm happy to be corrected by anyone else who has seen it. I think it's advertised as "10 and over", and it has some very harrowing scenes.

However, thats just my opinion.

Thanks for that - I wasn't sure and would rather go by the guidance given than risk it being unsuitable. He can wait a couple of years1

You might get away with it but I think that he will enjoy and understand it much more in a year or so.
