WitchHazel
Have you seen it? I went last night, and it was superb! I've been to numerous London shows, and this is one of the - if not THE - best I've seen. I thought it would be a bit twee - the story of a boy whose horse gets sent to be a cavalry horse in WW1, and he goes over to try and find it. And it was done wioth "puppet" horses. I had expected large "puppets", or "hobby horse" type things, but I was wrong. The so called "puppet" horses were larger than real horses, and were absolutely magnificent. Every detail of the horses movement, reactions, ear flicks, were meticulously recreated. I don't want to say too much...actually, that's not true, I want to give you a blow by blow account of how great (and simple) the battle effects were, how emotional it was, but I don't want to risk spoiling it. If you get the chance, go and see it. I don't imagine for a moment that everyone would be moved to tears by it (although there were a lot of us, women and men, who were), but I also can't imagine that anyone would go to this and come out thinking it was a waste of an evening. Anyone else been? or going?
AnnieP
My OH went with his 13 year old daughter last year and said it was magical. They both thought is was stunning. I WANT TO GO!!!!
chelsea
Ooh, sounds just like my nephew's cup of tea and they are going to London in two weeks for a football match so I might mention it to my sister.
WitchHazel
Ooh, definitely do that Chelsea. Be aware though that a lot of the performance are "sold out", and there was quite a queue of people hoping for returns last night.
Old Speckled Hen
I have this booked for April. My daughter has been twice and was more than moved to tears by it. It's based on a book by Michael Morpurgo and he himself was overwhelmed by the adaptation onto stage. There was an excellent programme about the making of the play on the tele fairly recently. The expertise and devotion to realism shown by the puppeteers is legendary. I am looking forward to it immensely. Edited to say it's here on 4OD http://www.channel4.com/programmes/making-war-horse/4od#3010005
WitchHazel
Thanks for that link OSH. I was going to buy the DVD (of the making of) at the theatre, but the crush was too much. Love to know what you think of it when you've seen it
Chucky Mama
MIL took us all over new year, it was wonderful. There were people waiting to see if there were any spare tickets when we were there too. Well worth a visit.
Clur
What sort of age is it suitable for? I think my nearly 8 year old would like it from what I hear, but I'm worried he might be a little young?
WitchHazel
Hi Clur I think it might be too old for your 8 year old, but I'm happy to be corrected by anyone else who has seen it. I think it's advertised as "10 and over", and it has some very harrowing scenes. However, thats just my opinion.
Sam Palmer
We saw it last January. My eldest son and I read the book beforehand and were at a loss as to how they would do it, as it's told from the horse's perspective. It's therefore slightly different to the book. The puppetry is fantastic and it's worth going just to see that. We'd recommend it!
chickencam
We loved the book, we listened to it as an audio book on a very long journey and were all moved to tears by it. Michael Morpurgo tells a very good tale. I would love to see the stage version, I had not heard of it until now.

He can wait a couple of years1
