pinched/aggravated disc

Recommended Posts

You may or may not remember me writing about a bad back due to slipping on slimey decking way back in April. My doctor gave me diclofenec and after about three months it generally settled down. Well it's back.

Since Christmas it started getting worse again. I didn't think I'd done anything specifically taxing to it (Have been über careful with it since the 'incident') although a little stumble on the snow/ice may have done it, or having a boogie at a xmas party could also have done something.

Anyway, went back to my doctor (New practice since I moved house) and he asked me 'what do you want me to do?' I said 'make it better' LOL, so he has referred me to a physio/sport injury specialist. (VERY chuffed I hadn't been fobbed off with just some old schpeill about backs being tricky, etc)

My first visit, the physio diagnosed a pinched disc (Like a slipped disc I think) where the disc has been squashed and part has bulged out causing the pain and aggravation.

Had some massage and ultra sound and a some exercises to do, plus he taped me up so that I'd feel the tape pulling my skin before i feel it on my back if I'm in the wrong position. Have cushions on my uncomfortable chair at work too. Was improving slightly, up until mid week...

When I got this stinking cold and pesky cough. Coughs and disc problems do not like each other and it had me in tears at one point. Had accupuncture on saturday and that has helped a little.

Does anyone have any idea how long this disc problem is going to be so acute? I realise I may always have a back problem. (Especially as original incident was so long ago) Great. But this is getting boring! LOL

Sorry for rambling on. Just feel that someone out there will understand and be able to advise.

Thanks guys

I do sympathise! Not a disk problem, but I snapped a muscle and jarred my back after a very heavy landing at work at the end of 2006 (work as cabin crew). Physio helped, but I do notice a difference when I do the exercises that I am supposed to do. Trouble is, we are all so busy that you forget to do them. They do help if done on a regular basis. Did your physio give you specific exercises to do?

All is fine until I try to lots of gardening, stack logs, lift bags of pellets/aubiose etc. The next day I am in pain and have to take Naprosyn tablets twice a day for a couple of days.

Have you thought about a tens machine? I know a couple of people swear by them :D

I have to do kind of like a slow arch of back while pushing pelvis forward. Ten times, every couple of hours. Also have to stand up and walk about a bit away from desk at work as being in one position for a length of time is not good. (Tricky when i work 8-5 mon-fri sitting at a pooter!)

Never heard of a tens machine. Are they pricey? Do they work? I've been taking Cuprofen when it's bad.

Oooh ouch :( I trapped a nerve in my neck years ago and had to have treatment for about 3 months. I can't do anything now which involves lifting my arms above my head without being in a lot of pain.

My neck is weaker now and i've had a few problems with it since. I slipped on a wet bathroom floor about 18 months ago and triggerd it off again. Had 6 weeks of physio and exercises to do which seemed to sort it.

I had a pinched disc years & years ago.....did it by using crutches after breaking a bone in my foot

I think it cleared up pretty quickly, but i suspect its all down to which disc you have injured. Chances are, mine was one that didn't have a great deal of stress on it all the time...yours may not be :?

TBH I can't rally remember much about it,other than it hurt a lot & I got some pain killers that really spaced me out.Hence the not remebering, probably

You have my sympathy - I have two prolased discs; one in my neck fform a bad car accident 20 years ago - doesn't give much gyp. The other from bearing a large baby 11 years ago; this one play up every now and then, but so long as I get to the osteopath as soon as it starts niggling, he can sort it very quickly. I have to say that I probably don't help matters with my active lifestyle :roll:

Try to take painkillers until you can get it sorted; they make you less likely to be tense and the muscles to go into spasm.

Keep at the exercises from the physio. My physio always recommends warmth on the offending area as well as excercises.

I go to a sports physio for my back ( result of falling down the stairs in my teens and then a nasty horse riding accident), I have a whole lot of exercises to do but if I forget to do them all hell breaks loose.

Admittedly my problems involve a grumpy ligament, an easily aggravated nerve and muscle wastage.

Ouch, my sympathies too. I have a low back disk problem too and when it flares up, it can takes months before I feel nearly normal again.

I used to visit the chiropractor whenever it got a bit sore, but tbh it was too late by then. These days I have a regularly monthly appointment just to keep an eye on things and then the occasional extra appointment if needed. I find this a much more successful way to deal with it and haven't had a flare up for years now (fingers crossed, touching wood etc). Ibuprofen and ice or hot packs also help if it starts niggling (or if I've done too much in the garden).

I know what you mean about being careful and you do learn the hard way. I say I lift with my brain now, now my brawn!

I've got three protruding discs, one far worse than the others. I've suffered for a long time, and am having another course of physio and accupuncture at the moment. I'm on pretty strong pain relief patches from my GP. A tens machine can help - mine came from Lloyds chemist.

Everyone medical I have spoken to recommends pilates. I started in September and I find it really helps. All the exercises are what a physio will suggest to you - two physio's I have seen have told me they can't recommend anything better.

You need to go to a small class - possibly not one at a leisure centre as they are often more geared towards 'aerobic' type activities. Mine is in our village hall, and we are a class of about 6, so lots of personal attention!!

I can't say that it has changed my life - but its certainly made it easier, and pilates can be very relaxing too.

Hope this helps.

Thanks guys.

I'd been doing a 'body balance' class which is yoga, pilates and Tai Chi all mixed together, since the initial incident, but stopped it as soon as things were hurting around Christmas. I didn't want to do myself worse injury. When the pain subsides a bit i'll get back into it as I found it useful too. The Physio guy agrees. (At the moment putting my socks on in the morning is enough of a 'workout' for me as it's agony! LOL)

I really feel for you - am still recovering from badly slipped disc 4 weeks ago; everything I have read says average recovery time is 4 to 6 weeks, but OH has had problems with a bulging disc on and off for years - but his is exacerbated by bad posture at pc and can you tell him!!!!

I'm doing yoga on the wii which seems to be helping, and am being referred for various things - perhaps an mri would help clarify the exact problem and then you can get more specific treatment.

Hope you feeling better soon. x

I gave birth to ds with a slipped disc and to say it was painful was an understatement!! I was induced 3 weeks early as I was in such alot of pain and I was bedwridden. Took years to recover and still not right 6 years later!! Worth it though

Bodybalance is great ... love it!
