Old Speckled Hen
DH was admiring our neighbour's brand new 4 X 4 yesterday and he said he bought it after being marooned for four days in the house during the snow and nearly running out of food. DH was absolutely astounded and asked why on earth hadn't they knocked on our door. They must have seen us coming and going. I noticed the drive was uncleared but I thought nothing of it We live in a small strung out hamlet and we are fairly new here but talk to everybody. Our neighbours are a youngish couple and do seem to keep to themselves. I was quite shocked This is how neighbours used to be in the London suburbs where I used to live. I took them round some eggs this morning
Couperwife
oh no , maybe they thought they shouldnt disturb you? maybe they enjoyed being marrooned (without the lack of food) i must say, getting a new 4x4 is a bit extreme, we might not get snow like this again for years cathy x
The Dogmother
Golly that's sad. I hope that they feel able to ask you in future. Our street is 5 mins walk from the town centre and very neighbourly, we were all out shovelling snow for each other and gettinmg shopping in for the less able neighbours. Patricia W
Maybe just an excuse for a 4x4? It is amazing though how many younger people don't have any experience of a sense of community. I notice that where we live. Us oldies who have lived here a while have experienced baby-sitting circles, women's groups ( anyone remember the National Housewives Register?) car pools etc, whilst young people's lives revolve much more round work and the communities evolving from there. Aunty e
We moved out to Woodford so that we had a bit more in the way of community, I know all my neighbours' names now, and who their pets are You've reminded me that I need to find a baby sitting circle, and ideas where to start? I'm back at work on Weds, so mother and baby groups aren't a great option anymore, unless I send OH
The Dogmother
Tr doing the Big Lunch this year - we took part in the first one in 2009 and it was brilliant - go permission to close the whole street off and we had a ball.... despite the rain! That's a good idea but I don't know if, as a newbie, I'd get away with organising everybody, but will do a barbie or something.

Perhaps if you were to put a flyer through peoples doors asking if anyone would be interested in the idea you may find that any of the long-standing residents who are interested in organising things would join you in the organisation? (sorry for the unwieldy sentence - I know what I mean )
Old Speckled Hen
Lesley, that's an excellent idea. Do you think it might be a good time to ask if anybody would mind a cockerel in my back garden
Lesley
Yes - but wait 'til you've plied them with food and drink
The Dogmother
That's how we organised ours - we have 97 houses and most people know each other, so we did a leaflet drop, then went around knocking and asking - there was a tremendous amount of support and activities for everyone. Each household donated a raffle prize and brought food and drink, some people got their contacts/companies to donate stuff, we had loads of bunting and it was a real festival atmosphere.
