Lavenders_Blue
We bought our annual Toblerone at Christmas (last of the big spenders, us ) which we've only recently got round to opening. As I munched my way through a triangle the other week, I was idly looking at the ingredients list and noticed egg in the ingredients. I e-mailed Toblerone to ask if the egg used is free range and this is the response I have received from them: Thank you for contacting us concerning the egg white used to make Toblerone . Kraft Foods recognizes animal welfare is a growing societal concern. In the EU we require all our facilities and our direct suppliers’ facilities that manage live animals, to comply with the established EU animal welfare regulations. These standards cover the handling, housing, transportation and slaughter relevant to each operation. We source our eggs from a range of suppliers, some of which include eggs from caged hens. So that's the last Toblerone I'll be eating until they change their egg to free range. Just wanted to give the heads up to any other Omleteers who may not already be aware of this. Charlottechicken
I thought Toblerone was Swiss? But from the email quoted it appears to be owned by our plastic cheese friends, Kraft Who don't they own?

Lavenders_Blue
I didn't realise Toblerone were owned by Kraft until I received their e-mail reply. I nearly deleted it thinking it was junk as I had no reason to think they would be e-mailing me It does beg the question, who don't they own?! Charlottechicken
Found this. The Cadbury brands don't appear to be listed separately yet, but include Maynards and Frys. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Kraft_brands Edited to add:......Cadbury brands here funny, I thought they owned the Maynard brand too, used to love their chewy milk bottles

Lesley
They obviously own anyone not owned by Nestle! The egg is in the nougat pieces - I haven't bought one for ages because of the egg content
Egluntyne
It had never occurred to me that there would be egg in Toblerone. Thanks for pointing it out.
BarbaraJ
Nooooooooooooooo another one!!! have stopped eating creme eggs (get M&S instead) but what can replace Toblerone, actually M&S used to do a lovely bar like Toblerone but all they do now is a packet of tiny little bite size bars! Valkyrie
I thought it was Swiss as well. Hmmph. Looking at the list I have the urge to see what is in "Chicken in a Biskit" and "Naked Drinks". Reading down further I also thought Nestles owned Birds Custard - they used to. So it's now owned by someone else.
henriette
Do we ever really know what goes on?
The Dogmother
Kraft also own most of Banbury Europe's biggest coffee processing plant is in the north of the town, they also make some creamy toppings and other stuff here. Despite their staff lay-offs last year, they remain one of Banbury's major employers

Well I didn't exactly receive a speedy reply from them so 3 weeks may not be unusual. I know what you mean about palm oil. It's in EVERYTHING! My shopping takes hours as by the time I have checked for battery eggs, palm oil and made sure it's vegetarian (ok so that was my choice, but it's amazing the number of unlikely products that aren't vegetarian!), doesn't contain enough salt to give me kidney failure etc... I make an ever increasing amount of stuff from scratch now.
The Dogmother
Rosie is currently on a crusade about palm oil - she and a friend are doing lots of reseacch and going to lobby their tutor group.
sandyhas3chucks
Me too, maybe this will help some. Good Morning. Thank you for taking the time to contact Arla Foods Ltd. In answer to your question the oil used in the Anchor Spreadable is Rape seed oil. If you require further assistance please dont hesitate to contact me. Regards, Anne-Marie Sanderson, Consumer Relations Dept
Lavenders_Blue
Thanks Sandy, that's really useful to know. I have a feeling that Lurpack spreadable also uses either rape seed or sunflower oil as I bought some recently and am 99% sure I would have checked! It's the biscuits, cakes, shampoos, soaps etc that are more tricky to avoid aren't they?
