millymollymandy
Hi I am supposed to be using the computer to find a new job but I am finding it very frustrating. How do you find a job when you don't know what you want to do???????? I currently work for the OHs family business and have for a few years but spending 24hrs a day with my OH and far too much time than is healthy with his family I need to get out before it is too late. I have spent ages on job websites but that magic word that you need to put in the search box still eludes me and i just trawl through pages of unsuitable jobs. If only sitting around playing with chickens and cats was a job. Never mind back to trawling the web this has only distracted me for a minute
A chickychickychick-ENN!!
Have a think about what interests you. Do you like working alone or with other people? Indoors or outdoors? Engaging with or helping people? Office work? Practical hands-on work? Asking yourself general questions like that helps to pinpoint wider fields of work. If you like cats and animals, what about volunteering with a cats shelter, or as a vets assistant? If you like being outdoors, what about working in a garden centre, or with a landscaper or as a builder? If you like caring for people, what about being a doctor's receptionist, or working in a school or hospital? Why not see a local Council-based careers advisor to see what skills you have, what you would like to do, and how you can combine the two? Valkyrie
If you have a farm local - ask if they need help at any time. You could go part time with the family business (I know what that's like - and his lordship's out today whahey) and perhaps get paid in veg or meat - like a barter system. majorbloodnock
How about taking a personality test for a laugh - such as here. It's certainly not a magic bullet, but it could give you a few ideas that might at least start you thinking....
Valkyrie
Millymollymandy - you must do this! This is me: ISTJ "Trustee" These are dependable pillars of strength. They often try to reform their mates and other people. They make good bank examiners, auditors, accountants, and phys. ed. teachers, and boy or girl scouts! 6% of the total population Well my friends do sound off to me and I probably am regarded as strong with them, but I don't try and reform them. I worked in a bank, but not an examiner. Auditing and accounts would drive me potty. As far as PE - I played hockey, hated the Brownies and never wanted to be a teacher (although my Art teacher wanted me to go on to teach Art). Thanks Major - I hope people don't rely on those results - quite horrifying! I must go and look at my horoscope (something else to be avoided because it always is so much like me - NOT! )
bluekarin
Apparently, I am INFJ: "Author". Strong drive and enjoyment to help others. Complex personality. 1% of the total population. These are serious students and workers who really want to contribute. They are private and easily hurt. They make good spouses, but tend to be physically reserved. People often think they are psychic. They make good therapists, general practitioners, ministers, and so on. I don't think anyone has thought of me as psychic Not sure about the job options though. Me! A minister? I don't think so
Goosey Lucy
I am ISFJ: "Conservator". These people are service and work oriented - very loyal. They may suffer from fatigue and tend to be attracted to troublemakers. They are good nurses, teachers, secretaries, general practitioners, librarians, middle managers, and housekeepers. 6% of the total population. Yup, that's me except for the troublemakers part. Christian
Same as me Goosey Lucy! ISFJ: "Conservator". These people are service and work oriented - very loyal. They may suffer from fatigue and tend to be attracted to troublemakers. They are good nurses, teachers, secretaries, general practitioners, librarians, middle managers, and housekeepers. 6% of the total population. Trouble makers? That bit I don't agree with either. Good luck with the job hunting MMM
Lewis
INTJ: "Scientist". Most self-confident and pragmatic of all the types. Decisions come very easily. These are the most independent of all types. They love logic and ideas and are drawn to scientific research. They can be rather single-minded, though.. 1% of the total population. I think thats quite a good description

A chickychickychick-ENN!!
I always think Myers Briggs tests are like astrology for management consultants. They're broad brush descriptors masquerading as specific personality types. Good for getting a vague sense, but not for taking as a set-in-stone definition of yourself. As an ENFJ, I would of course say that. But sometimes I'm an ESFJ. Or an ESFP.

They're broad brush descriptors masquerading as specific personality types. Good for getting a vague sense, but not for taking as a set-in-stone definition of yourself. Absolutely. Any tests like this are an attempt to pigeon-hole, and very few if any of us actually fit comfortably in a well defined compartment. However, so long as they're understood to be rather crude, they're still useful if someone's struggling to stick a stake in the ground; they're a starting point, not, as I said before, a magic bullet. All IMHO, of course....
millymollymandy
apparently I am also INFJ: "Author". Strong drive and enjoyment to help others. Complex personality. 1% of the total population. These are serious students and workers who really want to contribute. They are private and easily hurt. They make good spouses, but tend to be physically reserved. People often think they are psychic. They make good therapists, general practitioners, ministers, and so on. some of it could be true! It's a fun test but more of a distraction I have thought about being an animal welfare officer with the Rspca and have emailed them as they have no positions at the moment. Half of me wants to get that elusive job which is worthwhile and satisfying and the other half of me wants to get any old job just so I get a change and get out of my old job. We will see.......... Chickendoodle
Why not try a job agency? My YD has just got herself a brilliant job through an agency and if you find a good one they can work wonders. They will only send people for interviews who are suitable for the particular job and the company does not have to read hundreds of applications and interview hundreds of wrong people before they find the right one. My ED also got her job through an agency - she went as a temp to social services and is now doing a social work degree!
fluffyknickers
I am ESFP, which is funny as I was in Public Relations for years and now an entertainer (face painter)! ESFP: "Entertainer". Radiates attractive warmth and optimism. Smooth, witty, charming, clever. Fun to be with. Very generous. They make good performers, they like public relations, and they love the phone. 13% of the total population.
keyhole kate
I am ESFP too but like millymollymandy I am currently looking for work I havn't a clue what I want to do other than I am feeling very disillusioned with working for any employer at the moment
