Feeder for Scraps

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Just wondering has anyone got any good ideas for feeding s"Ooops, word censored!"s to chickens. I have been putting a plate into the run but its nearly embedded in the ground by the time they're finished eating. Was just wondering if there was some sort of hanging feeder to put s"Ooops, word censored!"s in.

Thanks

Hi

Think most people hang their food in those spiral bird ball feeders. I have not tried it yet but I am thinking of hanging a few brackets in the wir to hold such feeders. You can buy them in size small or large. Take a look on the rspb website

There's a sort of square cage that's meant for suet blocks for wild birds, and I've used one of those quite successfully - stuff it with cabbage leaves etc and hang it up.

However, that's mainly when I want them to have a distraction. I usually just chuck veg s"Ooops, word censored!"s, rice etc straight on the floor of the run. I don't think chickens are too bothered about having plates!

Sometimes I use the plastic trays from microwave dinners, but mostly I use a large terra cotta plate thing (I forget the name, but it's what you put under flowerpots to catch the excess water.) It's large and heavy, so they can't accidentally tip the whole thing over when they step on the sides.

Plates are mostly to carry stuff out to them though, my girls seems to like to scratch out all the food onto the floor of their run before they eat it!

We use these - about 99p from Wilkinsons:

Funnily enough, I bought one of these today! I peeled a carrot especially and... the girls ran away like it was going to eat them  But they got the hang of it once I dangled the peel out so still hoping it'll be a good distraction, once they get used to it :)
